Anyone out here using Uber or driving for them?
For those that don't know, it's basically a business that employs other companies' drivers and private vehicles to act as taxis. In a nutshell, as a driver, you sign up, they give you an iphone to run as GPS and fare interface. You pick up passengers not off the street but through the iphone app only, which means they have to have a CC first. Since identities of all passengers are stored and no cash changes hands, there's a much lower risk of getting mugged.
I'm thinking about signing up. The cool thing is that I can do it as little as I like. I don't really go out hard on Saturdays/Fridays, so I can drive for 2-4 hours on those days, driving people to and from bars, etc.
One of the major variables here is insurance. Uber states that personal insurance is fine, however there was a lawsuit in Cali, where there's now a liability dispute and ins. company's point is that the car was commercially used to transport paying passengers.
I'll call my insurance company at some point soon and discuss this. Overall I like the idea of working when I want and completely on my own schedule. I would use the extra cash to exclusively fun gun purchases, knifes, ammo, outdoor gear, electronics and other 'toys'.
Anyone with experiences as a driver for Uber?
