Porting the Intake Manifold

Can't believe how much better this mod is. Nothing but pull all the way to redline. Need to get a dyno!!!!

Thanks, I think that settles the question for everyone that this mod actually works... and other than $10 for a die cutter and a few cuts on hands/fingers.... it was very simple...

No problem, this and MPFab's BPV mod seem to be cheap/free mods that increase power and drivability. If I still had my Sonic I would probably have both done.

Haven't done much to any car other than change the oil, but thought I would give this a try.

Took me about 3.5 hours and was able to get the manifold out of the car for porting.

Definitely noticed the difference! I am on a stock tune with the K&N drop-in filter.

Next thing on the agenda is a tune! :]

So I ported the intake manifold with no trouble. Still on a stock tune.

After a day has passed the check engine light has popped on. I have also noticed the MPG go from an average of 28 to 23/24.

Any thoughts??

When I did this mod I also did the bypass mod... When I turned on the car it was in limp mode with about 13 cels. I cleared them and everything went away no problem. I think the mileage has gone down because of the cel. So if you tell us what the code is we will let you know what the solution is

I just did this mod last night along with the triple bypass (bypass valve bypass solenoid bypass).

It took me 3.5 hours. At least an hour of the time was spent trying to maneuver the IM out and back in, and detach the two cursed clips on the bottom before removal.

I started the car and got no CELs but I haven't driven it yet to test it out.

I didn't get a CEL when I did this mod. But I have gotten CELs on other projects for the dumbest reasons...... like forgetting to plug the MAF harness back in. :facepalm:

Removing the IM involves many connectors and hoses. Be sure to give a once or twice over the next day when your constitution replenishes and be sure everything is buttoned up properly.

Also an intake leak will surely throw a code. Likely a lean code and would hurt MPG. That is something to inspect.

I am new to modifying cars. Just started modifying my sonic last weekend.

-cobalt boost gauge

-mpfab anaconda is coming today!

-Shortly following is trifecta stage one kit and bosch injectors.

So I am far out from porting the manifold but I was just wondering, what exactly in the pictures are you grinding out?

There are little tabs in side the intake manifold that apparently help to atomize the fuel better for better gas mileage. You basically cut those out and smooth out the sides with out taking too much out. Doing this mod allows for the car to keep pulling until torque management kicks in or if you are tuned and have a manual transmission shift gears at 6500 rpm with out the car feeling like it is running out for breathe. Thats just my basic understanding. This mod does help a lot with the overall power curve which is nice.

You can clearly see in the intake runners in the pictures in post number one what is being removed.

I did this and some porting on the throttle body (dont think i was very agrassive on the throtal body) and my rs runs fine no noticeable changes in normal driving and that is with the stock tune

Yep mines in the shop right now with a ported intake, exhaust, turbo, and throttle body and it runs fine on the stock tune.

I bought a new intake to swap when I took it in for repairs. I didn't want my missing tumblers to void my warranty. I may just be over cautious though
