I think I pay $50 more a year
for personalized plates.

We only pay $44 extra the year we get the new tag, which is every 4 years. Sounds like some states really rake you for them

In PA its 20 bucks one time fee, after that you just buy the little tags that make it valid for another year like everyone else. I was astonished how cheap it was.

I believe its only $17 for custom plates here in New Mexico but none on my car team get them makes it to easy for the cops to single us out we had a guy that had a 350Z for a while and his plate said something like 1 SYK Z he got popped once for racing after that every Friday we went cruising he would get pulled over and finally sold it and bought a corvette no custom plate popped again for exhibition hasnt been pulled over anymore even after going out open header.

New York seems to be the most expensive out of everyone that I've seen posted... Of course...

Straight from the DMV website "Personalized Plates
For an initial fee of $60 and an annual fee thereafter of $31.25, you may order personalized plates with up to eight (8) letters (A-Z), numbers (0-9) for standard Empire State plates or six characters for picture plates (see below). A motorcycle plate costs only $35 initially and $18.75 a year thereafter."

You can check for plate availability for FL so can't see why you couldn't for your state?
