Rev matching

I'm fairly new to driving a manual and am wanting to try some more advanced techniques. Can someone explain rev matching?

From what I understand, it's used when downshifting. When you have the clutch pressed in, you give the car a little gas, then downshift, then release the clutch. Do you release the gas before releasing the clutch?

On a side note, how much RPM do you have when starting from a complete stop. I try to use as little gas as possible, but sometimes feel like I'm giving to little gas as the start is a little rough.

You tape the peddle to rev match when down shifting, it keeps the motor at the rpm the transmission is turning at causing less shock or unsettling of the car on down shift. I never really rev matched in my Sonic though, I didn't really blast into a corner with enough speed that I needed it.

When starting I do not use much throttle unless I'm in a rush.

Rev matching can be done in more than just down shifting in fact in my Mitsubishi lancer I only used the clutch to take off for almost a year just because I could.

Basic premises is to put slight pressure on the next gear and when the rpm match the trans it slips into gear. Occasionally you may hear slight grind if you don't hit it just right or don't have enough pressure. I wouldn't say it's an advanced technique it's just something that can be done.

I never really looked into why people do it. Hell I only did it cause I knew I could ha ha.

Rev matching used to be necessary in old cars or trucks that didn't have syncros in their transmissions. Performance-wise, when racing and near your traction limit, late-braking into a corner and downshifting to the next gear to set up accelerating out, a downshift w/o revmatching can momentarily jolt your drivetrain - enough to make the driven wheels break loose.

In a RWD car, this is akin to pulling the e-brake in a corner. Heel-toe braking is practiced to simultaneously operate the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals all at once to do this. With automatic rev matching now - you can focus on the clutch and brake and not worry about the engine.
