This is the first forum that I have been on that wouldn't allow you to post until you wrote 10 intro posts! Anyhoo...

My name is Bryant and I live in Georgia, USA. I purchased my first Sonic in January 2012. It was a Victory Red Sedan. I loved it. The trunk was huge. The gas mileage was fine with the 5 speed/1.8 L combo.

I traded it on December 28, 2013 for a 2014 Sonic Hatch Back that is Crystal Red with the 6 speed auto/1.8 L engine. I still love it. However, I have two issues:
1. The engine at idle is ROUGH, especially in cold weather. When I took it to my dealer, they said there was a TSB that recommended only Tier 1 gasoline suppliers (Exxon/Mobil, Shell, Chevron, etc...) I still have the rough idle...Any ideas?
2. The gas gage has a mind of its own. It will go from full to 3/4 of a tank and then back to full. It will show no gas with the low fuel light on and will only hold 8 gallons of gas. Anyone else have this issue?

I loved my first Sonic, but it had MANY recalls and my "check engine light" came on and it took 5 trips to the dealer and a lemon law letter from my attorney before they could find a problem. I was hoping the bugs would be worked out by now...

The mandatory 10 post rule is an anti-spam measure that was put into place just before you joined. This site was bombarded with spam and this was the solution. As far as tier 1 gas I believe that is more of a myth. I use all different brands and have no problem, although I only use premium. For your vehicle issues, you might want to send Chevrolet Customer Care a pm.

Thanks for the info. I agree about the Tier 1 gas. I seem to have the rough idle regardless of gas brand. I've seen on other forums that people with '13 and '14 Sonics have the same problem and it seems everyone is given a different solution. My dealer basically said that GM didn't know what the problem was. I think I will send a Message to the Chevy folks!

If you're using regular, try mid-grade or premium instead. I've owned at least eight Chevrolets over the years, and most of them ran noticeably better when I used the higher octane grades of gas.

DO NOT use E10 in it - whatever you do. Even for the ones that say they are optimized for it. Record your engine sound before and after if you want to know why - you can feel the pain it's in when running on that crap.

That is easier said then done being 99.9% of the gas stations in my area use e10.....


I always just run 93.

That is always a problem too - you dont know what they actually have in it - we get news reports now and then of servo's caught out having more ethanol than what they should in specific fuels - they always use the "it's because it's been sitting in the tank and settled" excuse.

We'll have 5 pumps at the station, one will be E10 then 91, 95, 98 and Diesel.

98 is marketed as the best fuel to put in a V8 or high performance car's.

E10 is a no no unless the car specifically says it's made for it - even then i swear the stuff is designed to fubar your engine. It made the news then the police filled up on E10 rather than 95 and it blew the engine.

On purchase the car was filled with 91, i ran it as empty as i could then i filled it with 98 (expensive!) and will fill it up with 95 from here on in.

I noticed your from Australia, my stations don't have the e10 option. I Just have 87,89,93, with a warning label "may contain up to 10% ethanol".

My other Cheveys also ran a bit better with mid-grade. I'm currenly experiementing with my new Sonic - got 93 in it now with only a slight improvement (might be in my head)
