Run the econo mode for around town, if you have an android phone get the bluetooth ob2 adapter + torque app (or get a scangauge) so you can see your instant mpg and drive accordingly, and finally-- don't use your AC...
Anytime the A/C is on the compressor is engaged and consuming power and gas, doesn't matter if it's on fan setting 1, 4, or 50
Running the AC compressor (which also runs when using Defrost, so it isn't really the AC compressor per se) costs a couple mpg. Running the fan does not seem to change mpg at all, if it does it is imperceptible. Lowering the windows costs even more mpg than running the AC, though, at least at highway speeds.
I suppose best bet would be to lower the windows when you first start out, to dump all that heated air out of the cabin, then seal up tight, run the AC with Recirc until it gets cool inside, tap the AC snowflake off and just run recirc to keep the cabin comfy, cycling AC back on every now and then if it gets too warm. This has not, however, been tested against simply leaving the AC on constantly, it is just suggested by logic. If it works, perhaps installing an aftermarket thermostat would be a nice mod?
I don't use the AC very often, but when I do, it sure feels way more than 6 or even 20 HP are used. I end up having to stay in each gear far longer to get a similar acceleration rate. 6hp is not really detectable by a butt dyno on 138hp car.
I also dont use the AC very often. I find the feet/defrost function is cold enough for me
