Official: What are your real world MPG Numbers

Recently I've noticed that a full tank will last me six days max. But most of the time it's five days. I go by that now, I stopped doing the mpg calculation game months ago but I always averaged 28-30mg. Makes sense cause my job is only eight miles away and traffic every morning on the freeway and a bunch if lights once off the highway. I end up always hovering in 26-27mpg on the meter. I do 60 mile trips on Sundays and Wednesdays. That's when I see my number go up but it dies down eventually. Highest I've seen on my DIC has been 42.5. Going 59-60mph. I wish that number stayed liked that forever but that's impossible haha.

My RS isn't doing so bad.

With the exception of maybe the RS all other trim levels and engines have posted numbers above the ratings. I have not really noticed numbers for the RS yet, so they may well also be producing better numbers than rated.

See below for my mileage. Not too bad for RS (note I'll be 66 end of week), but I don't baby it either. :banana: I live at 6,200' and must go down to 5,000'+ to do any shopping etc. My driveway (all gravel and .3 miles uphill, 12-16 degrees) really hurts my mileage but its worth it for the view.

And there we go. The RS can produce decent numbers as well. Thank you for the post. I just never really paid that close attention to averages for RS owners.

I missed about 3000 miles, but have tracked 48,358 miles. I am sitting at a lifetime average of 35.6. Autocross season and change in work location are not helping my average much right now though.

I am still having fun watching the mpg's and what affects them. Up til today though, I never reset it until I filled it. Today I had some fun with it, and here are the results.

48.2 mpg - All Highway - 1300 ft to 400 ft. 70 MPH average. Got to 51 mpg last mile, but it was a steep decline last 1 mile. No playing with neutral to coast either.

26.3 mpg - Suburbs - 35 MPH areas mostly.

22.0 mpg - City - Slow moving, stop and go for about 5 miles. Many lights.

27 mpg - Suburbs - 35 MPH - 45 MPH areas mostly.

37 mpg - All Highway - 70 MPH average. 400 ft to 1300 ft. Not exactly same route.

Trouble with resetting was it caused fast changes in calculations with every minor change in driving. Giving it the gas, idling, etc. It didn't have long periods to stabilize. But still, the numbers seem very much in line with EPA estimates.

I suspect that the vast majority of those getting sub par economy are having unrealistic expectations for their driving styles and habits. If you looked up what was involved in the EPA test cycles you would understand that they are unrealistic numbers if you insist on driving in a "normal" manner.

Are you manually calculating, or using Fuelly.com to do the calculations for you? Or are you trusting that On-board thing (I just can't call it what everyone else does... haha).

Ac on or off? How much idle time? Windows up or down? City or highway? How fast do you drive once up to highway speed? How much stuff is in the car? Lots of things will have an effect on economy. In my current daily commute right now having the LTZ wheels on is probably costing me about 3 MPG based on previous results.

Ive been averaging at least 36mpg since I got the car. I've put 5,000 miles on it and got it used at 25,000 miles. This week I averaged 39.6. That is about 80% highway. Going no faster than 60mph. I never use ac and I almost always drive with my Windows down. I also always shift before 3,000 rpm. Usually closer to 2,500.

I'm surprised cause we have the same engine and they're both new. Mine's the Hatch, and I have that thing so loaded right now I can't even see out the back and I still got those numbers....

Like mitDR said, many things affect it. What about fuel? Did you try a tank of premium from a top-tier supplier or change up fill locations?

I wasn't happy cause I wasn't even breaking 30 myself for a while. Even my Fuelly average is still 28.5 mpg. But with around 1,300 miles on it and right after I tried a tank of premium, I noticed it start to really increase. I broke 30 mpg and last tank was 33 mpg. Only differences were warmer weather and I started using only Shell 87 octane. I packed more in, I drive kinda hard and have even been using AC.

Hope you notice the bump I did soon...

Oh yeah. That' true too. I forgot about those short trips. 1 Mile's barely enough to get the furnace burning efficiently.

She needs to get on the road again and go visit someone she REALLY likes. I'm too old and too far, but I think she got some places she could go

It did make me happy once I saw that "On-Board Thing" break the 30 mpg mark.

I am loving all the downhill rides I have and playing with that thing. Last trip from 1400 ft to 400 ft I tried to squeak out every mpg I could. At the end I hit 63.7. This car is SO FUN to drive. When I toss it in neutral to get the extra mpg's you cannot even feel any resistance in the ride. It's like driving a Soapbox Derby Car. It just rolls so smoothly.

Now, going back UP the same route, I got 37.7. Even uphill with the back seats down and a full load in the hatch and AC on.

That's fun to play with, but as the thread states "Real World Numbers", I find I am hitting the mark almost exactly, now that it's broken in a little AND the warm weather is here. But I also had to reset that On-board thing when I went from Suburbs to Highway or Highway to Suburbs to really see them.

I guess that makes sense, just kinda dissapointed because this is how much my old car was getting, and its ya know ...old. Lol.

Comparison standard

I suggest a standard for mpg comparison.

With a warm engine, drive a steady 55mph for 5+ miles on level road, no wind, no A/C, windows up. No passenger or cargo. Once up to speed, reset the DIC.
I get 45 mpg with 89 octane. 1800 miles on mine. (See below).
I you can't find a level road or no wind, drive both directions and average your two readings. When you turn around, first take a reading before slowing from 55. Once back to 55, reset the DIC.

I still average around 38 mpg, with around 80% being highway miles. I tuned my car a couple months ago and the first couple tanks after that weren't so great haha.

I got my best tank ever. 42.5 mpg the only thing I have done to my car is tint the windows. Need more miles.
