The 1.8 is built with economy in mind. Internals are designed around light weight and low resistance. If you want a 1.8 to survive with positive manifold pressure you will have to keep that pressure low. One of the main things holding me back from a turbo is that I want to do a full build and not just throw a turbo on a stock 1.8. I want a reliable build for 225-250 WHP that will run for many miles without issue.

Welcome to the family juanjj2!! Now that warthog312 and $ub$onic have informed you of the possible cost and consequences of boosting a 1.8l, I believe that you mentioned the more reliable and cost effective solution:

The cost of prototyping and building a 'reliable' 1.8 turbo could potentially be far more than the depreciation of the vehicle and the cost of upgrading a 1.4t.

My current mods already exceed the depreciation of my vehicle. At this point, what does it matter.

There's a reason everybody says to get the already turbocharged engine. It was only $700 more (if you at least got an LT) and you're never going to be able to duplicate that. Even trading in it's definitely the easier solution and probably cheaper in the long run. Surely you can get custom everything but that means longer waiting for it and $$$. So unless you can fabricate quite a bit of it, it isn't worth the effort.

When I looked into trading in my car for the cheap easy way out for some more power I was looking at a loss of about $7000 at that time. $7000 would probably be about what I need to do a full build turbo 1.8 on my own and have a reliable 250 WHP for many years, assuming I dont get too fancy with parts. For example titanium rods would probably be around $2000 so forged steel would be better as far as cost.
The biggest issue is finding companies to produce the parts, but that also applies to the 1.4 right now as well. I am not new to the unsupported engine game, so I have some idea of what to expect.

The 1.4T seems to be holding up well to 206 hp, which I've been running for over 6 months now. Of course it is possible that the 1.8 is also overengineered so as to be able to hold up to that kind of abuse.
But when you are comparing "beef up a 1.8" you are looking at a lot of unknowns, while beefing up a 1.4T is already showing a lot of promise. I know you are saying $7000 to trade in your car on one that is already 1.4T equipped, but my question is, how much to swap a 1.4T into your current ride? Again it seems to me all the parts to do this already exist. Then, on top of that, how much to turn your new 1.4T into the 250 hp ride you want? I bet that is less than 7 grand total.
If I was thinking swap though, I would be looking at swapping in the cruze diesel. In fact, that is my current pipe dream That would be a first for a Sonic, and should also combine power and fuel economy nicely.

I would not trust a stock internal 1.4 to hold at 250whp for a long term option. Either way I am looking at building an engine. why spend the money to swap to a 1.4 just to rip it all apart to build it stronger? Based on the number of failed stock 1.4s that I have been informed of compared to stock 1.8s, I feel that it would be a bad idea to spend the money and time to swap to a 1.4 and then upgrade it to 200hp just to have to worry about it holding. I highly doubt a stock 1.4 wil hold a reliable 250whp long term.

I cant decide on which route to take definitely want more power although modding a 1.8 is apparently not worth it... so either trade in for 1.4t or engine swap 1.4t... but now its not worth it because 1.4t might not be able to handle power increase?? i'm conflicted, is it even worth the trouble?

A full bolt on 1.8 is a blast to drive but is not cheap to do.
It's a night and day difference from a stock 1.8 to a full bolt on.
You would need around 300 crank hp to net you around 250 whp. That is over doubling the stock power level. I doubt you could make that kind of power reliably with the 1.8 or 1.4 motor. That is asking a lot from a stock block. A full custom crank, rods and pistons are gonna be far more than you all think. You have to realize those are being made from scratch. The stock parts would need to be reverse engineered and then a program made to produce the parts. There is a lot of hours there to engineer the parts for a one off setup. If you want to make real power, get a car that has more potential or swap in a different motor. Just my 2 cents.

The automatic transmission is the same as the 1.4t autos so it should be a direct bolt in on the tranny side. Oh and if you want a big brake kit, the Orlando's have 5x105 but use a 11.8in in front and 11.5in in rear vs our 10.8in rotors so maybe the calipers might work.
