Is my clutch slipping?

I've been noticing something odd happeneing lately. As i'm driving in 4 and sometimes 5th, at about 45-50 i'll notice my rpms go up faster as if i'm in boost like in a high horsepower car; you know, those videos with built evos. Etc. that when the boost comes on it flys through the rpms. Obviously not that fast and its happening between 2500-3500 if i can remember correctly, maybe 3-4. and i let off almost as soon as i notice since i know its not normal. Would this be clitch slippage? I've never driven a car that had a loose clutch before so i'm not sure. Any ideas? Thanks.

my wrx had the same symptoms. Would notice rpms going up but speed not so much. Also theres a distinct smell of burnt foulness that goes along with it

I have that happen every so often, but it's not like it's on every drive. But I don't notice any kind of smell to go with it.

Hahah yes, very similar to Vtec! But seriously, no smell or anything. It engages from a stop perfect and only happen in 4th and sometimes 5th. Havent noticed it everytime i drive either.

A slipping clutch acts just like your stepping on the clutch slightly, but you're not.

Is that what's going on?

Also, it should happen in any gear, not just 4th and 5th.

Yes, that's what happens, but I only notice it in higher gears.

I don't think any thing else but the clutch could be to blame.

That's where you'll start noticing the slippage, soon 'nuff it'll happen in every gear and the smell will be noticeable, by then your flywheel will more than likely be "glazed" and will need to be replaced not just resurfaced. I would start shopping for a new clutch meow.... just sayin'

I only have 30k miles on my sonic, but I am on my 3rd trans from gm factory warranty from crunching between gears.

Being it's a hydraulic clutch while I've never experienced it I'm told once they start slipping it's not too long before you're stuck somewhere.

I'd get it looked at ASAP.

While I'm not pointing fingers 30K is plenty of time to destroy a clutch by abuse.
It could also not be fully engaging due to some other problem which will destroy it in time. It could still be salvageable at this point if something is binding etc.

During the time of the second transmission, it felt like the trans wasn't fully disengaging while shifting like it was supposed to. I took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong, I had the second trans from 1500 miles to 30k miles.

Not necessarily. Slip is usually evident closest to 4th gear, or the 1:1 gear. Lower gears have too much mechanical advantage for it to show, the opposite for the higher gears.

You may be right,
But in my opinion if you're @ WOT at a decent RPM in 2nd and 3rd and your tires aren't slipping then you should be able to notice. But I think I get the point.


I still stand by my previous comment to get it looked at ASAP.
If something is binding causing the clutch to slip it needs to be fixed and even if the clutch is shot you don't want to get stranded somewhere.
