Phenolic Spacers

I know a lot of the Mitsu guys, Genesis guys, and others regularly add phenolic spacers to help lower their intake temps. Does anyone know if any of our vendors are working on something like this for us? Would it really even help us out that much?

I see the theory as sound, but don't think our intakes get as hot at stock boost levels.

The Evo has a metal intake, which has a much lower thermal conductive rate (I know I'm saying this wrong) than the composite plastic of our intake manifolds.

I've never had my had get burned on our plastic intake, and given how tight the space is between the head and firewall, I'm not sue one would fit either.

Is it worth investigating? I'd start with measuring the surface temperature of the OEM intake over a range of conditions to see what, if any improvements could be offered.

I suspect this is one of the reasons why none of the sheet metal intakes have made it to market.

it would work to produce more low end TQ more then lower temps. Was thought about but was dropped do to it having a composite manifold

No, I don't think so; but that's a pretty broad topic. It may be beneficial in a specific application, with a specific combination of mods. The best use I could see is if using a metal intake, to help insulate it from bleeding heat from the cylinder head. As no one has done that so far, it's all speculation.

Composite intake doesn't transfer heat like metal. It would be like adding an extra slice of plastic between our head and plastic intake.

Phenolic sheet is a hard, dense material made by applying heat and pressure to layers of paper or glass cloth impregnated with synthetic resin. These layers of laminations are usually of cellulose paper, cotton fabrics, synthetic yarn fabrics, glass fabrics or unwoven fabrics. When heat and pressure are applied to the layers, a chemical reaction (polymerization) transforms the layers into a high-pressure thermosetting industrial laminated plastic.
