Strange issue with dash and micro fiber towel. Am I the only one?

I keep a micro fiber towel in my glove box just to wipe down any dust that accumulates on the dash and what not. Well today I was stopped at a light and figured I would wipe down the tach and speedo area.I wiped behind the digital speedo with the micro fiber and the dash went blank and the tach went to 0. Of course the car was still running fine but this concerned me. It only does this if I wipe behind the speedo in the little nook area where it attaches to the dash. Is this something I should be concerned about? I can rub my hand back there and nothing happens but with a micro fiber towel It flickers and blacked out and kills the tach.Strange ?? Can anybody verify If this happened to them? Should I bring it in to Chevy?

Static? Definitely go to the dealership. My wife wipes the dash too, I'll wipe the next time I'm up there and go in the crevice..Will let you know if it blacks out

There is a way to clean the dash while satisfying any OCD needs. Keep using the microfiber towel, and buy an antistatic gun to pretreat your cloth and the dash before wiping.

Then seal up the vents and door jams with tape. Set up a dehumidifier in the interior to remove any traces of water. Preferably this penguin style one:

Then drive your car into an automobile seal-a-meal bag. Here the motorcycle version is shown.

Buy an industrial vacuum pump to remove any excess oxygen and give a nice seal.

Vacuum overnight.


... if you're not OCD, try an old t-shirt and watch spraying any liquids directly onto the dash. could be a wire/circuit is loose also.

interior isn't air tight...there's flaps in there to prevent presure variations... so step one is not gonna work

You didn't state getting out of the car in step two though...so should you seal yourself in?

Yes behind the digital speedo screen. Just happened to do it once and noticed it blacked out

hmmm maybe a loose connection. You can take that part off, but I'd fear breaking clips and stuff. If it only did it when you were cleaning, you'll be okay. Something to keep an eye on though...

You're completely correct. We're going to need to approach this from a different perspective. Replace sealing the vents/jams with insulation surrounding the entire vehicle after you get out of the car.

Yes, yes always seal yourself in when possible. In this case since it will be under vacuum you'll need scuba gear and an exit tube for carbon dioxide/nitrogen. Save some bucks here by going with a second hand old school style suit
