If a dealer put rings in an engine and didn't hone it they would never touch anything of mine ever again.

Well, that's why I left the bike at a different dealer last night. They had another KLR in there with the same issue and were doing some testing on it.

Told me they should start looking at it today.

This weekend will be in the 60's and I took Friday off so I could go for a nice, long, warm ride, but I doubt I'll have the bike back by then.

Oh well, backup plan is to go backpacking this weekend, since I have Friday off anyway.

This is sorta how steam heat is. Radiators running between 212-218F, you can touch them but only for a second and the heat coming off is about as hot as what the Sonic can put out when fully hot.

The Sonic's water runs at what, 220F? So the air coming out is probably 200-210F.

Nothing like waking up in the morning, taking a hot shower and then getting out and drying off with a towel that was on a steam radiator. Gotta be careful where you put the underwear though, that can be a painful experience for a split second. When stacking things on the radiator you want to first put the towel, then pants, shirt and underwear on top to keep them warm but cooler than the rest.

Vast majority of apartments in Chicago are steam heated and I do remember the feeling of putting on clothes and using towels that were hanging out on the radiator while I took a shower.

Since my place is electrically heated now, the best I can do is pull out freshly finished laundry and pull it on. Putting on hot jeans feels amazing.

Edit. When I visit my parents in Chicago during the colder months, they condo is so freaking hot, I can barely stand it. No exaggeration - they love keeping it at 83-85 degrees during the winter.

It's a Tecumseh, yeah it would hurt.

You can actually get a Tecumseh to start in the winter? I have experience with two and they would barely run in the summer. Fuel injection might be a good idea for a Tecumseh.

All total to convert the scooter over to fuel injection I would probably be looking at spending about what I did to buy the thing. That being said, this would be mostly as a good way to learn tuning. I also have a dislike for carbs and the associated issues they have.

Biggest thing I learned is put a fuel stabilizer in the bike for winter storage. I ended up spending 200$ to have 4 carbs ultrasonic cleaned cause I didn't put stabilizer in it 1 winter

All carbs will get gummed up over time and same FI setups will, too.

You're correct, running a stabilizer is a solid way to prevent most issues if the motor sits, even if the float bowl is drained.

Occasionally running some Seafoam or equivalent through the fuel system of a bike also helps keep the ethanol deposits at bay longer.

Fuel gumming up is not my concern. I will have to play with the jetting when I make changes and the current carb does some off things that need sorted out. Fuel injection is a better method to me.

I also need to spend some time really learning how to adjust a program to run an engine. I would rather waste the head, jug, or piston on a single cylinder half harley, than waste a cylinder in my car.

Tecumseh made something like 99% of the engines used on snowblowers from the 1960s-2009 and they are known to start easier than other brands when cold. They basically owned the cold engine market for 50 years.

So, yeah.



FI is less likely to have issues with 10% ethanol than carbs, by a lot. The main thing that cause issues with ethanol are moisture and when you have a small amount of fuel sitting in a bowl with the entire top exposed to a vented air supply its bad news for storage.

The best thing you could ever do is FI with a vacuum setup for the fuel tank like any modern car.

I'd just rather not waste my cylinder and run the carb in my bike.

The carb needs rebuilt and rejetted. To me it would be a fun and challenging project that I can learn from. If I smoke the jug I will just upgrade to XB parts. Spending a couple hundred to fix an oops while learning is better than the same oops and smoking a $1000 engine in my car.

KLRs are set up a little lean from the factory and many drill out the metal cap over the mixture adjust screw and adjust it slightly to richen the mixture.

I wonder why Kawasaki sets it up leaner from the factory?

Also, me having ridden in mostly mid 40s and sometimes below may have caused the mixture to lean out even further due to air density.

Rebuild parts are in for my honda. Oh what joyous hours I have ahead of me rebuilding it, In the cold, because it's freaking winter.....

I pulled my stock exhaust off to look into making a "header" and the exhaust valve is completely white. I have read that an exhaust alone will require a rejet. I basically had "nature made" exhaust upgrade. The cores inside the muffle rotted out and about 2/3 of the flow path was eliminated.

Researching fuel injection a bit more now.

So the dealer says that compression is great on the bike, and the leak down test is good, too. They saw no signs of burning oil, such as black plug or what not.

They are going to do a 500 oil usage test. Makes me think I'm crazy seeing the oil consumption that I was. Hmm.

Leaner means more efficient, more power and lower emissions.
Assuming it doesn't damage the engine and results in complete combustion.

Obviously running lean to the point of missing doesn't mean more power.

But yeah, overall, the leaner you go, the more heat you make and the more power you make. Kinda like when you blow on a fire and it gets brighter.

I just read a long article on it, kinda blew my mind. The problem is when you make too much heat and cause pre-ignition, damaged valves or missing.

My 660 had larger jets in it. Almost never needed the choke even when it was 20F out so it was definitely too rich. Thing was, it sure ran nice. Much nicer than a stock one.

No adjustments on those carbs that I knew of, just swappable jets.

Got caught sleeping on black friday and didn't swoop up a surface 2 which is my first choice after buying my daughter one the previous year on black friday for not so much $texas$. The surface 3 has more than doubled in price from the previous model and for what i need it for, its too much dough. Picked my son up a Toshiba something or other 7" tablet on the "12days of christmas sale" microsoft had for like 70 bucks.
