Hell, my 2008 VW Rabbit that I bought new was far more reliable than my Sonic. By far.

There are many VW owners that would say the complete opposite.
Many who bought the DSG early on spent more time without their cars than with.

Not sure if that has changed or not. I have to assume either they stopped making the DSG or it's fixed because otherwise they would be out of business.

There was also the huge coil failures in the early 2000s that left many people stranded for months because they couldn't get the replacements fast enough.

Does VW make a good car? In my opinion yes. Are they always reliable? Absolutely NOT. I've appreciated VWs for a while and almost bought one a few times.

My wife and I also own a 15' gti dsg. No issues yet with 8k miles on the clock but it's not to say we wont.... tuning the cars is hell on the stock turbo... even a cold air intake can and possibly will destroy the turbo. So no upgrades for us for now

The 2.5L Rabbits were often called the most reliable recent VW, and it's true. I'd hesitate buying any other older VW, unless it was a 2.5L I5 with a manual.

The only negative thing about it, in my experience, was its less than stellar fuel consumption, but the I5 engine was torque-y and reliable.

Has me thinking, what is the JDM market (besides subaru/mitsu) going to bring to the table??

AE86 would be schweett, awd or rwd doesn't matter

That's not typical. My 2.5 I5 averaged 27-29 in the 50k miles that I had it.

Although our gti has a 2.0t it still get better then advertised fuel economy. We went to PA witch was 16 hour drive and averaged 36-38 mpg with 3 adults and lots of luggage and this was around 70-75mph the whole way to PA

Don't let the country of origin blind you to a product - not necessarily a car, even.

Oh I don't. I know Honda Toyota and Subaru all make cars in the us. Last I heard vw was Canada and Mexico. Didn't know they had a TN plant.

Big difference there.

The VW 2.0T is a highly respected power plant.
The VW I5 on the other hand, I have no idea. No one I know ever talks about it.

The FSI 2.0, had some reliability issues. For example, the infamous cam follower that most users replaced ever 30-40k miles in order to prevent a large failure. TSI is better, but inherently more complex. Both engines are direct-injected, and have their fair share of carbon buildup issues, which has been widely documented.

Between the two engines, 2.5 is more agricultural and less refined (and not very well disposed to mods), but it's far more reliable with fewer potential issues, such as no cam follower worries or carbon buildup worries.

I've spent many-a-days on the VW boards when I owned one. The reason 2.0 is far more popular, is because it's easy to make power with with relatively little money. But, all that comes at a cost.

Yes, but my comments about reliability were mainly focused around the 2.5 motor.

I will stick with my GM engines. I have had 2 cars with 2.4L LD9 engines. One engine is at about 160k and the other was swapped in (I broke my "race"motor) with about 190k and had around 220k when I totaled the car. My 96 K1500 has 135k on its 4.3 as well.

As far as engines go, one of my favorite engines for its durability is the Jeep Cherokee's 4.0 inline 6. The original Cherokee, not the current one.

Those things are damn solid. Owned one with 224k miles on it, which I used as a winter beater, and that thing was outstanding. Coupled with the Asin AX-15 5-speed manual trans, it made for a great drivetrain. Oh, and the Chrysler 8.25" rear was great, too.

I miss my old Cherokee. It was a tank.
