Its a really bad idea to do it that way, just a matter of time you will forget you drained the oil and start your car without oil in the AM.

Seriously?

You wouldn't remember that you had only done part of the oil change with the hood up and the drain pan still under the car? You wouldn't notice the filler cap sitting on the front panel under the hood before closing the hood?

If you read what I wrote, I clearly stated "start plugging up".

I've heard of guys that just change the filter and top off the oil as needed. This liquivac thing reminds me of that mentality.

My personal opinion is that the Liquivac is perfectly acceptable. Assuming you ran the engine to at least operating temperature prior, the majority of contaminants should be in suspension in the oil or picked up by the filter.

Again, that's just my opinion. It's not difficult to find out that oil and oil changing methods are one of the most hotly debated topics on all car forums.

Wow ... heated debate. I did some research and for the most part a lot of places say you'll still get some oil and some of the issues with stuff remaining even if you do a drain vs a suction.

Part of the reason I asked was because I didn't want to jack the car up, but now that I see how easy the drain plug is to reach I'll probably look for a low profile pan and do the drain method or just jack the front up a bit

I wasn't trying to pick a fight either.

Just clarifying that I never said or implied that using a LiquiVac WOULD plug up a new filter.

IMHO, I think it's silly to invest money in a special tool that can't do the job better than the proper size wrench (that you should have already if you are inclined to change your own oil) and an inexpensive drain pan.

Now that doesn't mean that I don't invest in tools or toys...:banana:

Using the LiquiVac will be fine. I use them in marine applications all the time to change oil. If that's how you're most comfortable, do it that way.

I like how a local Chevy dealer in Davenport IA is running a commercial on TV that states if it takes longer than 20 minutes to perform an oil change service, the service is free. I know where I won't be going for an oil change! That's another reason that I do my own maintenance.

Regarding the vacuum powered (through the dipstick tube) oil change devices; I could never understand how you determine if the suction tube is actually at the bottom of the sump, and at the lowest point. There could be, depending on the operator, a substantial quantity of oil left in the sump.

My Pela oil pump shows me how much I drew out. Makes it easy to be consistent with fluid exchange amounts.

Love the dialogue/debate. Enjoy hearing other opinions and viewpoints.

I use to change my 57 bug oil every 2k, what's 3 1/2 quarts?? But I would always open the sump up and clean the bottom with a rag... it's a big hole with it open... and sometimes I would pour a 1/2 quart down with it all open for a flush... it would bring some crap down almost every time... it was a pretty horsey motor... I agree and always ensure I drain the oil on my vehicles after the oil is warm, if the car has been sitting I'll let it warm up for a few minutes first. Always a new filter too, I dont get why some people insist on running a filter for 10k yet change the oil at 5k then 10k on the same filter...

That said, I know some BMW and Mercedes (possibly others) have done away with the drain plug to make changing your oil at home a difficult task. This is where the liquivac or siphon pumps are critical, without them there's no way to get the old oil out short of dropping the oil pan.

Yeah Land Rover is bad at that too. It’s got a drain plug, but to use it, gotta drop the whole front skid plate taking complexity to a whole new level. No dipstick to pass a hose down from a vacusuck. They do offer a tube on top, under the oil cap, but access, and finding a tube that would work with it is a nightmare. Lol
