I'm curious. Have you owned any other cars? Did you get significantly below the EPA ratings on those too?



I usually get higher MPG numbers than the window sticker of whatever car I'm driving says. I have friends who can't ever even meet the EPA numbers.

I live in south Florida and drive usually 10 over the posted. The most I've gotten is 35mpg. I drive 102 miles commute a day.
So maybe I'll slow down a bit and try that.

In fact I have owned 76 other vehicles. the newest being a 1995 save for this sonic. And I drive all my cars the same way, like I have somewhere to be, but not full on speed racer.

This would be the most "economical" car I have ever owned. and its getting worse mileage than most of the old clapped out hooptys I have driven. I long for my old 86 fiero that got 51 mpg highway


This thing got 25 mpg in the city, pedal to the floor. which you pretty much had to do to get it moving lol

Also on the subject of shifting, my second gear grinds if you dont granny shift. however I can flat shift all other gears.

Cars are programmed for 87, unless you have mods, intaje exhaust tube etc, dont run higher. Higher octane is hsrder to ignite, causing you to run rich (negatable by how much, but true)

Run 87, like good gas tho. Shell mobil sunocco for at least 3 fillups then run seafoam and resume. No difference, dont waste money on high octane cuz clearly your gas is a thirsty bi***

I stopped using Qwik stop gas and started using gas from name stations,Exxon,Sunoco and car now has acceleration that was missing and back up to 31.5 mpg as it was a year ago not 26/27 and running flat.:banana:

I took it for an 80 mile highway trip cruise set at 65 the whole way.

Hey. Same thing with mine. I have a 16 RS 6m and I've read on here somewhere to use the finger shifting technique. Instead of grabbing the knob. Just gently shift using your fingers. It took me a while to get it. But now I shift so much better. And I try to do this for 1-4. 5-6 I shift normal.

I've taken my car to the dealer 2 times and both times they sent me away with assurances that nothing is wrong.

Second gear issues huh? I used to just hold the clutch in for like three seconds. Now I just tap the gas a bit while the clutch is at the very top. Wait I just read more. Your gear grinds? o:

Yeah but it's gone down a bit since I shift different now. I don't speed shift.
I'm usually just driving to work and don't need to shift into second quickly. Maybe merging into traffic but I usually just shift normal. Traffic can slow down a bit I guess.

And the more I drive it the more I study how it reacts and the more I adjust.

I wish it wasn't like that but as long as it's working fine and doesn't have any catastrophic issues then I can live with that.

I love my car and since it's my first new car, ever, I don't want to rough it up too much.

Interesting, I've never dropped below 30/31 MPG even if I'm really getting on it. Mine is 6 speed RS too but a 2016.

You do realize that without the ethanol, your mileage will improve by about 3%.



Ethanol is a "cleaner" fuel as far as emissions go, but it has less energy than gasoline, so it reduces fuel mileage.



I go out of my way to buy that "crappy 91 octane no ethanol fuel" for my '64 GTO because of the benefits that it provides a better driving experience for an engine that was originally designed to run on straight gas. E10 will work, but it is more prone to absorb moisture, which is not good for a car that isn't driven year round.



When we built my 462 ci engine - it was built to be able to run on the most readily available "premium" octane available in my area - which is 91. I know a few stations that have 92 in my area - but can't think of a single station with 93 around me (there may be - I just haven't seen them).



If I was inclined to pay $.50 more per gallon to get a 3% improvement in my fuel mileage in my Sonic - I'd buy the "crappy 91 octane no ethanol fuel".



If max octane would improve fuel mileage - run E85 - it's the highest octane (non racing fuel) you can buy. But being 85% ethanol the mileage drop (not improvement) is actually somewhere around 30%.



I actually had some discussions about building my 462 to run on E85 because of the higher octane (which would have allowed me to run higher compression/more advanced tuning to get more power) because I really didn't care about the fuel mileage (and E85 is readily available and much cheaper than "crappy 91 octane no ethanol fuel") - but their were too many negatives involved. Mainly that long storage period where the 85% ethanol would be absorbing moisture.

I want to believe you, but I've seen 85 for like 2.50 and I've filled up with 91 for 2.36 :/

Current price locally for E10 is 2.12 per gallon. E85 would have to sell for $1.48 per gallon to equal the cost per mile.

But E85 sells for $1.79 per gallon.

Best cost per dollar is the 87 octane the engine was designed to run on.

True but for me at least e85 is comparable factoring in the mpg difference

But yea full true you will get slightly better mileage than e10 because of the better energy density

I run 87 octane and consistently get at least 30MPG, on highway I can get over 40 if I really try

One thing I want to point out: the turbo does not have enough pressure to kick in until about 2000RPM. If you stay below 2000, you will get the best mileage. When you go over 2000, you get more power at the cost of more gas as the boost pressure rises.
