I DO NOT CONDONE STREET RACING.
This took place on a very wide, straight, and smooth one-way road with two lanes. The speed limit on this road is 50mph. There were guard rails on either side and absolutely no trees, houses, or other buildings within hundreds of feet from the road. This was a very remote location and the safest street location on earth to conduct this experiment outside the realm of a track. Again, I do not condone street racing. It is dangerous and silly. Don't be an idiot like me.
My buddy has a 2011 MK6 GTI that is completely stock. We raced three times from a 20mph roll and accelerated to 70mph using a countdown shouted by both of us in unison with the windows rolled down.
First race: I jumped the count and had him about 10 feet behind me for the entire race. He didn't catch me, however, I didn't pull ahead.
Second race: Perfect start. I rolled ahead at a toddler's walking pace at the top of 3rd gear and into 4th (very fast shift) and held the lead until the end.
Third race: The GTI jumped the count and held the lead during the entire race with my car creeping up on him slightly at the top of 3rd gear and the beginning of 4th.
Every shift was perfect according to him. Mine were as good as they could have been also. However, it was decided that my car was a hair quicker. A different result could have easily occurred on a different day. Both cars are essentially identical.
2011 GTI 4-door 6spd = 200hp
With 200 pound driver = 3,313 pounds
Power-to-Weight Ratio: .0604
2013 Sonic RS = ~175hp (estimate)
With 160 pound driver = 2,960 pounds (estimate)
Power-to-Weight Ratio: .0591 (estimate)
2013 Sonic RS Mods:
Lightweight wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires
Eibach lowering springs
Front and rear upgraded sway bars
MPFab Intake
MPFab Anaconda system
ZZP catback with very small muffler
Trifecta Tune (This is a canned tune. No data logging yet)
So, if you have a similar power set-up, you might just be as quick or quicker than a GTI
