I think if you're driving they come on anyways. At least mine do

DRL = daytime running lights. They turn off in Park, so that's probably why you think they are not working.

_ _ _ This. You won't see the DRL on unless the car is out of Park and you are outside the car. Have someone else get in the drivers seat and see.
Or. . . drive towards a large window in a car dealer and look at the reflection of your head lights as you drive towards it.
Okay again . First. . Make sure the Headlight control switch is in the AUTO position.
Daytime: Start the car. Do not "Turn On" any headlight switch. Put car in drive and ONLY DRL should be on. NO headlights as long as it is bright enough outside. If it is overcast, really cloudy or dusk. . . then both DRL and headlight MIGHT be on. A light sensor on the dash senses and controls this.
If both the headlights and DRL are on during the daytime. . . . with the Headlight control switch in AUTO. . . . then there is something wrong, the light sensor NIB on the center of the dash near the windshield is covered or not functioning or the BCM might have a connections issue.
Have you or anyone else pulled the top of the dash board off for speakers install, or any other repairs or messing around?
If so, might need to make sure the little light sensor is working. IT also has a little red flashing light when the car is parked and locked that indicates the SEcurity System is armed. Is that little red light visible when the car is parked and locked?
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Everything works out as is.
My GMC Canyon does not do this so I assumed the Sonic did as well. Every time I parked into the garage (in daytime), I noticed the headlights were on that is why I asked. I guess it was dark enough inside the garage to trigger the lights on.
