Dim instrument panel lights when headlights are off

I don't use daytime running lights, so the panel lights are always at maximum brightness during the day. I want to turn them off during the day when I'm not using any lights. Dealer told me to put tape over the dashboard light sensor. I did that and it has no effect---can't dim the instrument lights at all. Any other solutions?

I was actually thinking of something similar---cutting a piece of transluscent plastic to put over it. Seems like a very odd problem.

I hope you understand that that is illegal in a lot of states. Also why even bother to turn them off, if they're automatic you set it once and never touch them again. Then you can dim your instrument cluster all you want.

DRLs are not required in my state. I've never had automatic lights before so this is new for me. I will read up on DRLs , thank you.
