Porting the Intake Manifold

Grinding down the screws? Yeah the screws extend down past the bar they are screwed into, you just want to bring them up flush like in my picture. Some people have removed a little material from the screw heads as well, I didn't do that though. You'll definitely need a grinding bit like shown in the picture.

Oh! Okay I get it. So you're grinding down the screws that are on the butterfly valve. I thought we were talking about the mounting screws. My dremel came with the grinding bit 84922, it's a bit small but it might do the job. Any reason why this is a good idea though?

It's just to smooth the airflow's path to reduce turbulence. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about when you check it out. It probably doesn't make a HUGE difference but since we're in there porting stuff anyway we might as well knock those down too, and every little bit helps I suppose

Yeah!, From doing these mods I noticed no increase in power, just that it does pull all the way through 6.5k. I did notice less rattling from the hardpipe which is good. The car sounds different though It doesn't sound as mean as it did after I put on the MPFab IC kit. It doesn't pop nearly as much as it did before, so I'm gonna take off the resonator and put the straight pipe back on ! Now all I need to do for this week is install the TTR mounts, remove the snorkel, and put something to protect the charge pipe.

If I'm running the BNR tune do I need a re-tune after porting the IM or will she run ok after afterwards? I recall the answer being "should work fine" but wanted to confirm since I just ordered a new IM to port then swap in. THANKs!

You'll be just fine, if you do the porting before or after the tune, it doesnt matter.

After doing the IM porting i found these 2 pieces under my engine bay. Any ideas? One is hard plastic and the other is rubber. Haven't driven yet but everything started up okay.

EDIT: The PCV hose right in the middle is just slightly leaking. Decided to check it out after getting a lean code P0171. I tried reinstalling them o-rings or even just 1 of them but the hose won't fit with the o-rings in. Does anyone remember how the o-rings fit on that connector?

smog inspection with ported intake

I'm going to do the PCV fix later this week I have the trifecta turbo advantage tune to do the PCV fix you need to remove the intake has anyone ported the intake in a smog state and passed emmisions test ??? I can switch back to stock tune by using the cruise button how much does it change the fuel air ratio ? Leaner ? Richer ? I live in So Cal don't want to fail the smog trifecta says the turbo advantage tune does not change emmisions .
Has anyone passed in stock mode with ported intake ????

Well I'm not sure I'm going to port it I had my Sonic since 13 new and I haven't got a smog required yet so I'm sure my number is coming up soon with the solinoid bypass. I'm hitting 6,200 anyway with the trifecta turbo advantage tune I recently used manual mode on the automatic and it hit 7k and the power completely cut off at 7k I can hit 6,200 all day with the tune at 20 psi don't think it's worth it to fail a smog tail pipe test .

So I decided since today is a beautiful day outside that I'd port my intake manifold. Here are some pictures of it. I don't think I did too bad of a job for my first time doing this.


You can't really see it but the orange check valve is still intact.

Put the intake I purchased here on today, with the V2 PCV Valve mod. Just for fun I took a pic of the head with it off. A *lot* of oil ran down the block! I'm assuming it came from the crankcase port.

So I just did this along with bypassing the bypass solenoid, and cleaning the crap out of the little check valve. I'm wondering if anyone else keeps track of their boost/vacuum. I can't find any leaks but am idling around -8psi. Engine braking I still get -10psi but before that would happen at idle as well. Sorry it's all psi that's what my digital gauge reads

That is normal if i remember right. My Ultragauge shows -8 to -10 idling (my previous Sonic did as well, also note that my boost gauge tied to the intake manifold shows -18 to -20 at idle) havent installed my boost gauge on my new sonic, but will reg the same. Not sure when eng braking (should be in vacuum sense your off the throttle) havent looked at my gauge when i am.
