Hey everyone, first of all I want to say thank you for welcoming me to the forum. I want to start off by saying that I drive a 2003 GMC Yukon Denali fully loaded however I spend about $120 in gas every couple days at the pump. When I started my search for a second vehicle miles per gallon was one of my primary concerns. Also something small zippy that wouldn’t be too large and could go the distance whether it be through the state or across the country and back when I tell you, I went through almost 50 cars before I found the one that I liked the most.
That being said I settled on a 2014 Chevy sonic LT in pretty good condition had a small crack in the windshield way, way below the drivers line and one wheel bearing on the passenger side that was malfunctioning all in all I think it was a pretty clean vehicle except when I say clean I don’t clean is inside because it was the woman’s daily driver and she literally sold it to me after she came home from work one day so it will need a serious detailing, it’s kind of funny some of the things you find in someone else is used car, but that will be for another story
anyway, I drove it about 70 miles home and I did indeed notice the worrying on the wheel bearing so I made a point that that needs to be fixed ASAP.
I’m going to list some of the other things I noticed in hopes that somebody in this form has run across it before and can maybe explain what’s going on
When I hit bumps or uneven surfaces such as dirt roads, I could hear a rattling coming from the bottom left. We now know that that was a loose ball joint on the left front side.
Also the fans on the front in the grill, which I think are, the radiator fans are always on 24 seven and the AC does not blow cold when we pulled the computer codes from the check engine light we found out that the thermostat was stuck open , I told my mechanic about the issue and he said when he reset the code the fans no longer come on and the code no longer shows back up. I’m not 100% sure that this is fixed but this is why I’m hoping that you guys can weigh in on this .
Most severe problem with this vehicle is if I’m in park and I shift into reverse there is a rocking and clunking right underneath my feet that shakes the car and you can also feel the same exact feeling when you’re at high speed and you apply the brakes really hard and you pass into first gear as your decelerating. The clunking happens as well , otherwise this vehicle shifts like a dream it goes all gears when accelerating with no issues no delays no skips no banging and I’m very familiar with all this because my Denali also has a transmission issue.
The wheel bearing has been fixed by Mechanic he reset the code and said it has not come back on and the thermostat is not causing the fans to stay on all the time anymore.
I also had him do a full synthetic oil change and replace the air filter in the engine. Hopefully that will optimize my mileage even more tire pressure is optimal on all tires right now.
He is going to fix the ball joint which I don’t know what that cost will be, but that should stop the rattling underneath however, I can’t think that that shaking is coming from a ball joint. I think it’s something to do with a solenoid or a clutch pack or something else about the transmission that I don’t understand .
Anyone of you who’s ever felt that slight clunking or banging when decelerating down into first from a high speed or felt the same feeling when sitting at an angle with tension on the transmission when shifting from park into reverse, I would appreciate if you could chime in here.
I am going to the mechanics and we’re going to test drive it together to see if I could simulate the noise while he’s in the vehicle because he said he did not notice the noise at all.
Finally here is a picture of the vehicle once again thank you very much for the welcome and I really hope that I can have a long life with my new car .
