1.8L manual, rolled the dice to leave the AC on when filling, might have sputtered at some point but didn't stall!

Yeah the first time I filled I forgot to put the cap back on and drove a block before realizing it. The car will definitely run with the cap off and not stall.

The air conditioning won't help keep them cool when the car is on fire.

With how high the humidity was, bright sunny day so no lightning, and vapor recovering nozzles, its very slim that it could happen....but yeah not my normal practice

Guys guys, a car will not catch fire, blow up, or anything of that nature if you leave the engine running while fueling. This is one of those common myths that paranoid people think up and then tell others and it just spreads but there's no fact behind it. Yes gas station fires do happen, but NOT by leaving your engine running. Especially new cars, oh yeah and vapor recovering nozzles. So the nanny thing is just useless imo.

Something like this would have been a problem a few years ago. Not anymore. What did everyone think that big round thing was that got added to the nozzles?

You're right some stations haven't upgraded.
I figured it was the device that was sucking all the money out of my wallet...
I too have that same issue.. if i forget to shut the engine while getting gas, it will stall. I can practically replicate it all the times. After the 4th stall, check engine light came on.
Brought it the dealer and they said fuel must have spilt on some wires or something, so they reset the computer and the check engine like went away.
1 month later, check engine like is back on! ugh... so now its back in the dealer... will post with their findings..

Maybe if you shut off the engine while filling, you won't have a problem?

Seems to me you should shut the engine down when refueling only if you need a smoke while refueling.

I think the stalling has to do with this car having a returnless fuel system and the output from the cars pump varies from what the ecm commands because 1. The in tank pressure is not the same and 2. The pump output will change as more fuel is put in. This would cause the fuel trims to be off and either killing the car or directly tripping a nanny to kill spark/fuel
I'm not positive on this but it seems logical.
Also I don't feel fueling up your car while running is that dangerous, did it on my truck all the time no issues. He!! Most motorsports speed dump gas into their vehicles at pit stops with few problems. And I would just assume that putting fuel into a hot car that shoots flames out the exhaust and has no vapor recovery systems in the middle of a race would be way more dangerous.
Can it happen sure, most likely by doing something very stupid while refueling. Operating a motor vehicle is statistcly more dangerous than any mishap refueling. That said I don't do it on this car because it does stall out, oh well
