its because of the dui
Which is a load of crap and proves how F'd up the laws are in this country.
It's still B.S. Driving while intoxicated has nothing to do with owning a gun. He's not being denied because it's an OUI, he's being denied because in MA an OUI (even a first offense) can get you two and half years in jail. In MI ,for example, your first OUI can get you 90 days, your 2nd up to one year, so it would not affect your abillity to purchase firearms under federal guidelines.

I disagree...it shows that you are irresponsible with a tool capable of ending someone's life.

Irrelevant of our interpretations of the law, that is the part that makes the most sense. DUI/OUI/DWI gives the law just cause to think that you can't responsibly operate a firearm. Sorry, but that's just how it is.
DUI/OUI/DWI should give the law just cause to think you can't responsibly own knives...or operate a vehicle (people eventually get their licenses back)...or raise children...or operate heavy machinery...or operate a chainsaw...or...(the list goes on).
Aldakoopa made a good point above. It's nothing more than a means to gun control.
And just because it's the "law," that doesn't mean it's the correct law. There are a lot of ridiculous laws on the books that defy logic and common sense, and this is one of them...IMO.
Really? So every time I have a large knife in my hand and I'm drunk, that means I should never be able to drive a car when I'm sober?

Are people who have served time in jail for crimes where a gun was involved not able to get a driver's license?
Using your logic, you might as well say, "you may not have children because you were convicted of drunk driving." You know, since you were irresponsible with a car, you may be irresponsible with children.
There is NO correlation between driving drunk and owning a gun. None.
