Ways To Enhance Turbo Sound

I have the ZZP Intake and it does very well as to enabling one to hear the turbo whoosh.

I have seen and heard the DDMWorks prototype and per memory was also effective.

Both systems have a positive effect on power resulting from better airflow.

There are threads that show how to cut the airbox to enhance sound but there appears to be no other result from this mod. I tried to find them but was not able and have decided I do not care enough to continue the search.

There are other aftermarket intakes that some members of this board will swear by but the two I mentioned have posted dyno charts or links thereto the very positive (14-16HP IIRC) results and I recommend one looking to modify their intake seek them out.

I have already answered Aaron regarding the Injen but if he desires I will repeat what I once said.

I cut out my box and it was subtile but noticable. I now have his second home made mod on the car, I cut the neck of the MAF pipe as close to the box and threw on a K&N conical filter. I will snag a pic of it next time I'm out at the car. It was a big change in sound but the pipe is still corigated plastic so it wont be as loud as a stright metal pipe.

Thanks for the great info laborsmith. Are you worried about gumming up your MAF sensor with the oil from your intake, or is that concern unfounded? I'm very interested in going with the stage one package from Bad News Racing which includes your intake, the tune, and the cable.

Gumming up is what occurs if one over oils or otherwise does not complete the cleaning of the reusable air filter. So far, after a couple or more decades of K&N filters, that has not been a problem for me.

Whistle filter? That will get the crowds moving out of your way as you motivate down the beach or through a crowded parking lot.

Good choices that will go along with your graphics quite well.

Seems like a much larger filter surface area on the ZZP. Is that good or bad? IDK. I would lean towards good.

The only data on the DDM vs the ZZP is in DDM's 1.4 intake thread. You will have to dig a couple of pages back from the end for their flow charts.

ZZP has a dyno chart for their intake installed on a turbo Sonic posted on their web site. Some long time members may recognize the name of the car owner when they click on that chart.

My memory is comparable.

As for the filter size, once an air filter flows enough for the power you are making (we use the same filter on our supercharged 2.4L cars making over 300hp) the larger filter allows longer times between cleanings, that is all.

The only thing we are interested in testing with the ZZP intake is the fuel trims on a car without a tune for that intake. They are using a 3" intake tube which is larger then the stock size of 2.75" (the same size we use on our intake), and with that larger size then stock, the fuel trims should be off considerably. Anyone have a ZZP intake with a Scangauge that can check?

As for the sound though, any of the intake options we have tested here give a nice turbo inlet sound and make the car much more fun to drive

agreed. Just put y'all's intake on today. Man does it bring the turbo sounds out.

Not sure why they would go with a 3" intake diameter... thowing off the fuel trim is not good (to a certain extent). Does the company suggest a tune with their CIA? If not then that maybe grounds for a blown engine.

I would suggest checking with the company to be certain but it is my understanding the ZZP Intake ships with a sleeve inserted to allow it to work absent a tune and the sleeve can be removed for those users who desire to run with a tune.

I just received my ZZP intake yesterday and it indeed does have a silver insert on one end of the tube. I'm assuming that's the sleeve you're referring too.

You can see it here sticking out of the one end..

The instructions do say to leave the insert in the intake unless running their ZZP 1.0 flash. I'm assuming the Trifecta tune doesn't require the sleeve to be run as well, any input on that?

What it looks like they are doing then is to have the sleeve bring the inside dimension of the tube back in line with the factory setup, simple and effective for sure.

Dave, thanks for correcting me, I thought that you had all three for comparison. I've got a hard decision ahead of me when it's time for a intake. For the same price I can get the ZZP intake I can get your intake and what looks to be a sold heat shield. Either way I will end up throwing on a thermal wrap on the tube.

Dave is right. If you rip that sleeve out, it lets a lot more air in and you'll need to be tuned for it or you'll pop a CEL and your car will run funny. With that sleeve in there, it's an expensive noisemaker.

I understand that. My question is with trifectas tune should I install it with or without the sleeve? Without I would assume, no?

Yes, install it without. You will need to datalog and get your tune updated though.

Well tried my damnedest to get that reducing sleeve out an couldn't so I installed it with it in...Car runs great though.
