my biggest concern from almost all of you guys is comparing it to your past vehicles and kind of hinting at how under powered it is! is there no hope with even aftermarket of making this car quick? if i could get one pushed to about 250 of reliable wheel horsepower i'd be happy, but all's i've really seen was intake, exhaust, an tune...which wouldn't be a bad christmas present haha but I need more

You said you wanted better gas mileage then what you get from your EVO. The Sonic with the 1.4T and a 6 Spd will be a fun way to achieve that as long as you drive sensibly. Modifying the crap out of it may work against your better gas mileage goal though... The 1.4T Sonic has plenty of power for what it was designed for.
I traded a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT with the 6.0L V8 for my 1.4T Sonic Sedan and I am not disappointed at all (though I do miss fishtailing once in a while). You may miss your EVO at first but you'll get over it when your car/insurance/gas payments go down. I don't even notice that I have drum brakes in the back and it will be cheaper to change them when the time comes.
If your looking for a Sporty/Race/Leave others in a cloud of smoke car, keep your EVO. If your looking for fun to drive fuel efficiency, get the Sonic with the 1.4T.
We liked our Sonic so much we bought a Cruze with the same motor and a 6spd auto for my wife!

right on! i know i'll miss the evo. and it is more sensible to grab a sonic! but the way i want to go with mods was even if i still get 30 highway...it'd be a hell of alot btter then what i get with my evo haha one good thing that you all are saying about the sonic is it's fun to drive, and that's all that matters to me! when i test drove the sedan 1.8 i had the guy from the dealership gripping the door handle because i was treating it like my evo, and to be honest i was impressed then. i just want to make sure that after afew mods i can really enjoy the car and get it to squat and move!

im loving my sonic and i have had a few high hp cars and a ranger making near 400hp at the wheels. its great on the back roads and fun on the highway, and its still pretty new so im sure there will be way more parts to throw at it down the road.

Yeah, saying that modifying a sonic will reduce its mileage is only true if you beat on it. I tuned my Sonic with a straight power tune (no cruise so no Eco mode.....) and I lost zero mpg and I still need to log it to dial it in for the redneck SRI which will only help improve the mileage. Don't drive it like an all the time and you'll be good to go.

Evo X Owner Going to Sonic

Hey guys, I am the current owner of a 2008 evo x and I was looking to get it traded in this fall on a new sonic rs. i know im throwing away about 160hp and my all wheel drive. but I now have 2 kids and need to start saving on gas but want to still have fun. Just wanted to get some opinions from people on hows the sonic handles and its get up and go to know if its really worth making the switch to a sonic?

I came from an SVT Focus to a 1.4t LTZ. The Focus was modded engine wise, but stock suspension. The Sonic is no means as fast, but the handling is close. I think with the rear disc and beefer suspension, the RS will do well.

I think the suspension can be addressed and I don't think that the discs in the rear will come into play performance wise until people are swapping engines and transmissions. Now looks wise, discs all around just looks better but GM wouldn't have put drums back into their 1500 trucks if they were not capable and I have had no issues with stopping in my Sierra nor the Sonic.

I agree disc aren't necessary, but I can definitely tell the difference. Better braking does equal better handling. My SVT stayed much flatter than the Sonic. I will be addressing both issues with a H&R cup kit when the full kit is available and a RS rear disc swap when the parts are available. That with a tune and better tires. That's all I need for a DD.

Chris, discs are nice but I get GM's decision to go with drums on this car and if the RS disc conversion ends up not costing a fortune it's something I might go for as well.

I just think that since im finally deciding that i'm ready to part ways with the evo and go for something more family, drive anywhere, and still have my fun to go with a sonic! and since the sonic rs is so close to release, why not tear it up in the evo before she goes away! but i do love the looks of all disc, and i already plan on having a set of rims set up that look almost like my stock evo ones for the sonic, so it'll be showing off the disc.

Low end MSRP of these Sonics is $14k.... If I were you, I'd start saving aggressively and look for one on the used lots and simply keep both. Then declare the Sonic as your primary and declare your evo for weekend/recreational use.

But that's me... For the last 12+ years, I've always owned 3-4 cars at a time... I have long commutes and refuse to put the miles on a nicer car. Most cars will hit 100,000 miles but depending on the total cost of ownership, some cars are most costly per mile than others. Keep the car (often more expensive) for fun in the garage... beat the crap out of another car for family/commuter use.
