Changing your Sonic's oil.

Make sure you get your motor up to operating temp, then let it sit for 10 min and check oil. Accuracy every time

You know, I'm a bit annoyed that Mobil 1 5w30 is Dexos certified yet their 0w30 is not. I swear by the 0w** oils as I like their consistancy. We see below 0 here from time to time and as cold as -17F.
I'm going to assume being our car is under warranty I should stick with 5w30 even though I don't want to?

I make sure to put a load on the engine for at least 5 minutes, then park it and wait a few minutes before I check it. That way I know the oil coated all the surfaces and filled the oil filter.
What do you suggest for summertime if you plan to do track days and such? Would it be beneficial to go thicker? Is there any DEXOS approved oils that are thicker? I'm running 5w30 now and will probably stick with it through winter...
I did a quick search, I'm pretty sure Dexos doesn't come any thicker than 5w30. Probably best to stick with it for warranty...if anything does happen I can say I was using their specified oil.

Hey, is Royal Purple 5W30 Synthetic Oil approved by GM's warranty? It's not Dexos approved but on the new jugs it says that it meets or exceeds Dexos requirements, whatever the hell that means! How can it be one & not the other, I guess they don't wanna pay GM for the 'lil certification stamp on the bottle huh! The reason I ask is I'm thinking about using RP for my upcoming oil change, if not then I'll stick with Mobile 1 EP since it has the stamp of approval.

I just did my first change.. at 1600
I know, I hate myself for not having done it sooner but with my infant, commuting 80mi/day and not being able to do a change while people in the complex can see me, it was unavoidable.
I tossed in RP, had an awesome coupon from their website and it's the best.

You're not worried that RP doesn't have the official Dexos seal? Will it still be covered under warranty if you use it since GM requires it? And what online coupon do you speak of? I might use this also, if it's alright, I know their synthetic oil is very good.

Eh, don't feel so bad.
The first change didn't get done on my previous sonic until 5000 miles. We had a deal with the dealer for lifetime free oil changes but they wouldn't do it before 5K so I said screw it and just went with it.
Our new 1.4T I'll be doing the first change around 1K and I just passed 500 miles today.

Oh it's not by choice. lol My car is still at K&N so I can't change it right now even though I want to so bad.

Might be a dumb question but how tight is the filter cap? I'm changing my oil tomorrow @ 700 miles and just want an idea of what I am up against.
I have a 12" adjustable and a 12" Ridgid spud wrench for my steam radiator valve nuts. I'm assuming one of those would work but have no idea how tight this thing is. Being it has an O-ring I have to assume it could even be hand tight and work.

The cap isn't on that tight. If you have a 15/16 socket and a ratchet; that will make it quite easy to remove.
