Must have Sonic but need a Automatic!!

I wanted to wait till May of next year to buy a new car for the wife but now my 18yr old daughter is getting a job so she needs a car. This pushes up my time line by five months.

I wanted to get my wife a Sunburst Orange Metallic LTZ with the 1.4T/automatic combo, question is when will Chevy start production?

Anybody heard when the auto's are ready to roll off the line?

At least the best performing configuration was made available. What is silly though is if you order the top model LTZ it only comes with the 1.8, because an automatic is standard (should have just not offered an LZ2 without the top engine if you ask me)..

Ford did the opposite; when shopping around I noticed on the current top model Focus they add a sport suspension as an option (not available on any other model), however it only comes with an automatic. That strikes me as a little out of touch.

Someone posted on the Sonic Facebook page, that they saw the turbo engines being assembled with auto's in the factory last week. Maybe in a couple of months?

You can get an LTZ with the 1.4T and Manual 6 speed (LZ1). There are members of this forum that have that combo.

An auto is going to be offered with the 1.4T. It should hit production in Feburary 2012.

Those are validation builds that will go into the captured test fleet for testing and evaluation.

And by the way, the color is Inferno Orange, not Sunburst Orange Metallic. The 2 colors look nothing alike, and Sunburst is not available on the Sonic.

The following is Chevy's pattern and you will be able to draw your own conclusion. Captured test fleet vehicles are produced starting a few months before regular production and assigned to Chevy employees for the purpose of day to day real world testing. There are weekly evaluations conducted by the engineering staff. Final assessments are made during scheduled breaks in production, such as the two week model changeover in July or the winter break that occurs at the end of December every year. If no significant problem arises, retail saleable models will begin production shortly after the return to production. I suspect retail orders are being accepted by Chevy even as I write this note.

Several GM vehicles such as the Camaro ZL1 are currently undergoing this process. The last I heard, the ZL1 is scheduled to begin regular production January 9. That does not mean the turbo Sonic w/ auto trans will begin the same date but there is a good chance it will. February is possible but seems a little far down the road if the CTFleet vehicles are being made now.

My suggestion if you want a turbo Sonic w/auto trans is go to your dealer and inquire about ordering one. You can then make the decision as to whether you want to order or not. Two additional colors (grey and blue) are to be added early spring and that might influence your decision.

Thanks for the color correction. Don't want the 1.8L auto combo, we could buy today but I want the turbo. Six speed would be nice but the wife has a bad shoulder.

I can wait till March/April it just means I'm driving my truck to work everyday and then picking my wife up after work. It will cost me $144 per month drive my truck over the $40 it cost me to ride my street bike to work, not a big deal I guess.

I'm going to call Chevy and see if they have any anticipated production dates.

Haha your monthly fuel bill is < $200 ? I'd drive nothing short of a 3/4-ton if I was burning less than 100 gallons a month ..

At > 20 MPG with my little truck I'm still in the > $600/month range. Was about $700 +/- until fuel prices came down lately.

A Sonic is going to literally make it's own payment in fuel savings, now that is practical ! - Can't wait. Chevy fix your damn constraint on the LTZ w/ 1.4T !!!
