2013 1.4 Turbo mpg

Right off the bat my city milage is 34. This is a new 2013 1.4 turbo hatchback. It showed 17.1mpg with 7 miles on it when I picked it up. At 100 miles of my non-highway mix of hills and flat driving it has climbed to 34mpg. I can't wait to get it broken in and see what it does on the highway.

Be sure to reset the MPG calculator when you fill up.

I'm a tad disappointed with my mpg - OnStar says 35 lifetime but calculated out is 34mpg - right with what the combined mpg is supposed to be but I drive 80% hwy miles. I stick to 65mph most of the time but do drive 70 on occasion. I try and drive to creep the mpg avg up but it seems finicky.

I'm almost set to blame the lack of quality gas stations - don't have many that have separate lines for 93 (87, 89 and 93 combined into one) so I do get a mix of 87 in there.

It's silly though, when I fill up with 93 the miles remaining always says "430". When I fill up with 87 it's "395" so the car knows what octane I'm running yet I still have problems getting the mpg to be 37 on the hwy, even with 93 @ 65mph.

Still stock here on my 1.4T and 3500 miles on factory oil and air filter. Guess it's time for full synth and K&N filter.

I do an 80 20 mix hwy city and I get about 38-39 on a good week and 35 on the fun Ones. Your mpg are effected almost entirely by your speed. I stay between 70-80 and I do ok. When I tune it I expect to see those numbers go pretty high

On the Dyno the stock tune has way too much fuel so just playing with that a bit in the tune will get you better mpg.

I would get a diff tune if you are not seeing a gain, something is wrong

As the engine starts to loosen up (280 miles) I'm now averaging almost 34mpg combination hilly city and hilly highway driving. I am very light footed.

I really question whether the factory left a bunch of fuel in the stock tune as was suggested elsewhere in this thread. Chevy is trying to sell a high milage automobile. Why would they randomly leave it programmed so sloppy? If there appears to be any excess of fuel, there has to be a reason it's there and I would not be took quick to remove it.

You could be right and I believe I may have an issue with my tune. Just wish I could get a response from BNR about it! Not thrilled with their customer service at this point.

Almost every company does it. It is a safety thing. They sell the same car all over the world with the same specs. So they tune it very safe. Air density is different in the alps from nola. Same tune has to do both

Don't forget that it will take more time for your car to get better mileage. Cars get better mileage once the engine is broken in...and sometimes it takes up to 5k or 10k miles before you see the best mileage. Your mileage should improve.

And yes, the tune will get you better mileage for sure. When I had only intake and full exhaust on my Cobalt I got my car tuned for efficiency and saw about a 3 MPG gain when I wasn't on it...I was getting better city mileage than highway once in a while. Averaged almost 30 in the city up from the low 20's. On the highway up to about 33 when I drove nice. It was nice when I had a full-time job that I commuted to and a part-time pizza delivery job on the side. Then when I went and added a lot more stuff to the car, I started to lose the efficiency...now I average 25-26 MPG daily between hwy and city.

Not that I think anyone buys the tune just for mileage, but lets say you went from 36 to 39 mpg with just the tune...about how far do you have to drive to make $300 back at 3.5 dollar gas?

Ans: about 40,000 miles

btw I'm quite happy with the mileage...beats our honda fit easily

It isn't sloppy, the goal is to get the engine to operating temp as fast as possible. It is an emissions reason. It also has to stay in that range. So when you are on the highway during a cold day, extra fuel can be required.

The V8s are the same way. Just surprises me vacuum grille blocks have been used for over 30 years.

I might play with 1/4 and 1/2 smoked plexi to make a lower grille block. Aerodynamic and temp mod.

Also, if you have a manual, hypermile before you get on the highway. Warms up for the high speed and doesn't use fuel under load.

It keeps loosening up. I'm now over 400 miles and the same rolling and hilly combined milage is just under 36. The belly pan I ordered should be arriving any day now.
