Anyone else going to try no muffler?

I know I will as soon as I get the car home. I run no muffler on my WRX and love the sound. I had an exhaust shop fab up a section of pipe with a tip on it to replace my muffler so the exhaust still exits the rear of the car.

I know the sound will be different since the Sonic doesn't have unequal length headers like the WRX, but it should still give a meaner sound than stock.

And if it doesn't sound good I'll just hook it back up.

Why don't you just get either a CAI (Cold Air Intake), a SRI (Short Ram Intake), and/or a better exhaust system? All will add more bark to your sound.

Not only add more "sound," but all can be somewhat more subtle if you need/want them to be... when you're not stomping the pedal.

I'm sure you know in some states removing mufflers are illegal.

Whatever... the options I mention are a heck of a lot more worth it in the long run. Plus, you'll [supposedly] be adding a bit more torque and horsepower. Some who own them say you'll increase gas mileage by a gallon or so per mile by adding a SRI.

Something to think about?

If an exhaust is produced for our car that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, that would certainly be an option. With my WRX, I wasn't trying to gain performance by removing the muffler. With the muffler, the car was WAY too quiet. And I wasn't interested in spending the couple hundred dollars to buy an axleback system just to make it louder. Removing the muffler was the perfect solution.

Then I will take it to my local guy and have him cut it and bell mouth the end of the pipe coming from the engine that way I can put it back on if I want to.

well a deletion of the muffler is only beneficial(only on turbo motors, bc n/a need some back pressure) if that's what the most restricting of the flow in the exhaust system but the CAT's are the main reason for the most of the restricting in a exhaust of most factory exhaust components. but yeah if there is a really quiet factory muffler more likely it'll be more restrictive then the CAT but who knows without testing really. but yeah if removed of the muffler i'd highly recommend a high flow cat to match. I personally prefer a exhaust header, high flow cat and cat back bc it wouldn't be to loud until that little skinny pedal is hammered. :-D well of course a CAI to match it all then a tune to make it all work properly and efficiently.

oh yeah an cat really isn't needed besides for emissions can also be deleted but will have to reprogram the ecu to get rid of the silly little engine light :-D

I say do it! And report back the results.

I hacked the mufflers out of my 2010 Camaro SS, and I love the sound. I am a little leary of doing it on the Sonic since its a 4cylinder car, but if Dodge sold their turbo sans muffler, why the heck not?

Anyone know the diameter of the piping?

So I was poking around underneath the Sonic today, and noticed what looks like a HUGE muffler right behind the Cat.

Now, this could be a third cat, but I've never seen one so big! It was easily 2' long! The rear muffler was a reflection model, albeit stacked vertically instead of horizontally. I am very curious, now, what this car would sound like with this removed. There are so many boxes ahead of it, it almost seems like it isn't doing much but increasing back pressure.

Well, I think the subie only sounded good because of the unequal length Borla headers.

Yeah, I know it won't sound like my Subaru because of the UEL headers the Subaru has, but I bet it will unlock a little sound anyways.

DANNY5: I am thinking that is a resonator. It is too long to be a cat converter I think. I'm still thinking of a NoWeeds electronic controlled exhaust diverter. I know some consider it to be over engineered but the result is reliability as well as ease of use.

remove the windshield and side glass to get that roaring sound and eliminate stone chips at the same time.

One thing I'll miss about my Honda... the sound of that finely-tuned, purring, sometimes semi-barking little Honda engine. And that's all stock -- no CAI, SRI, performance exhaust, etc!

It sounds particularly sweet when vtec cuts in... almost intoxicating and irresistable... even "feels" good!

Fit4Sonic, you do realize that most small engines have had variable valve timing for a decade now? Honda did pioneer some of the technologies, but it's not that big of a deal now...all the manufacturers have highly developed VVT systems. Including the union made, government controlled, Sonic
