most companies go way out of there way to quiet an engine down and make everything less noisy all around.
a cheap way to quiet a car down is to add restrictions to the intake and add baffles and add tubes or anything you want to call it to distract the flow of air, slow it down, and make everything silent.
those usually end up making things less powerful and less efficient.
the rest is just personal preference. my g35 i wanted silent, my harley i dont
It is true they add restrictions, but it's the type of restrictions they add that make things quiet. I'm just saying I would think the best intake is going to be obviously as large and unrestricted as possible and quieter than the competition.
Have you ever heard an intake that only had a piece of pipe to it? Let me tell you it's really freaking loud. That's why the add all sorts of stuff to it from the factory to make it quiet. just like the exhaust.
Really loud Integra
Guess I don't know what I'm listening for. I just hear exhaust.
My turbo GTO (STS rear mount) had a filter right on the turbo. They wanted me to use a weather sock. It was restrictive (as evident by the lower boost reached in shorter gears) and it was not as loud as with the sock off. It may be that the sound flowing through the filter (which is a restriction) was louder because without the sock more air could flow, thus making more noise. However I will say that a run without the filter created not nearly as much "whoosh" as the filter did.
Of course, you only really heard that under boost. It was actually a pretty cool sound. It was all you could hear inside the car which is freaky.
was your GTO the 5.7 or the 6.0? Either way it would have been a fun car with an STS. but seriously you will get allot more noise on most cars without a filter or sock. it most likely wasn't as evident on the GTO because the intake was no where near the throttle body with the rear mount turbo setup.
Does anybody want a Harley quiet?
