I sent the following in January 2013:
I have a Sonic LT Turbo with 6 speed manual transmission that I bought in March 2012. It has about 5,000 miles on it.
Two weeks ago I was unable to start the car, although the electric system worked with the lights, radio, etc. The engine did not crank. I had it towed to a local auto repair shop because the dealer is about an hour's drive away. It started for the mechanic. His opinion was that I had not pushed the clutch pedal in completely.
A few days later, it failed to start again, although I pushed the clutch pedal to the floor. The transmission was in neutral. I pushed the clutch pedal up and down sveral times and put the transmission in different gears. Then the car started. Perhaps, is the switch--that prevents the car from starting unless the clutch pedal in pushed to the floor--sticking? And by pushing the pedal up and down and changing gears, it became unstuck?
I took the car to the local Chevy dealer, and although they continued to believe that I was not pressing down the clutch properly, they replaced the "clutch pedal switch", Part# 95057545.
That seemed to fix the problem until today, 12/10/2013.
I can reproduce the problem by not pushing down on the clutch pedal. I could not reproduce it by not fully extending the key.
From my experience, I believe that the problem is caused by the clutch pedal switch, HOWEVER:
- The problem is more likely to occur if the car has sat unused for several days and it is cold (in So Calif cold = 40 degrees).
- Bouncing other car around by having it towed is likely to cause the problem to disappear just when you want to have it happen.
Does anyone have more information on this topic?
