Changing your Sonic's oil.

Ohh no full syn on the first alright. So what oil should I use for first change then? And can i go to a dealer thays closer to me to get the filter? My dealer had told me to go back for a free change at 5k but by what I have read here its better before that.

Ya do it early. Just get the factory ac Delco oil and filter. Go to the dealers parts counter and they should get you hooked up.

Alright will do. So its okay if I don't go to the exact dealer where I got my sonic cause its kinda far but there's another one a little closer then I say "hello I want the factory oil filter and ac delco oil so I can do my first oil change" It would make me feel more of an owner if I do end up doing the change myself sorry if I'm asking weird questions and thank you SubSonic, you always answer my questions

So I've been thinking if should do the first oil change myself on my sonic ltz hatch (1.8) or take it to the dealer. I keep thinking anout it and now I'm at 2,600something miles and the meter says I have 65%. It looks like it isn't too hard to do it yourself especially with the oil filter being where its at now. I would change the oil myself on my old civic. I'm thinking about getting the oem filter and using mobil 1 oil.

Dave you can go ahead and use a full synthetic now and Mobil ONE is actually the preferred oil to dexos. The factory oil that comes in Chevrolets now is Dexos 5w30 oil which is a synthetic blend. It used to be in the older engines to run a few oil changes to break in your engine but not any more. All GM vehicles now come with Dexos synthetic blend oil except a few models which come with Mobil one.
I also do my own oil changes as I am extremely fussy. The 1st and last time I took my sonic to the dealer for an oil change the kid changing the oil filter spilled oil all over the exhaust manifold and never cleaned it up. That is unsatisfactory work, I now do it myself so I know the job gets done right.

Preferred oil to dexos?

Am I missing something? Last time I checked dexos is a oil spec not a brand.

Dexos is branded by AC Delco, The only preferred oil besides Dexos to be used in Chevrolet engines that is dexos approved and approved by GM is Mobil one. Dexos is also GMs oil Spec and must be used in there engines to honor warranty issues. I work for AC DELCO. Its my job to know the product and what direction to steer the customers.

Royal purple is also dexos1 approved

In either case I don't like to fun a full syn till the second oil change.

Royal purple is dexos approved but only mobil one is the official oil recommended by GM If you do not use AC Delco Dexos. Your warranty will still be honored with any dexos approved oil, just saying Mobil one is the only official recommendation by GM.
And its your own personal feelings if you want to wait till your second oil change to switch to full synthetic. I myself switched to Mobil one on my 1st oil change. Its all personal preference.

wow you must drive a lot. I only have 14000 on my sonic, had it for a year and a half. Royal purple is good oil tho, If I wasn't employed by AC Delco I might use it.

Naa, I only got 29k miles. But not much is stock

Between autocross and enjoying the loud pedal it gets used and sometimes abused. I am running royal purple in the engine and trans and it loves it.

Thanks for the input Scotiez. I'll be going to the dealer on saturday to get a oem oil filter.I think I will just go full on synthetic mobil 1. Should I also buy it from the dealer or like from walmart? Also where should I go for the tools needed, dealer also or better off with autozone? Too much questions again...

Go to Walmart, it is cheaper.
Walmart should have all the tools too

This what you need for changing your oil. Dealers are more expensive than places like Walmart. I don't know if they would have the oil filter tho. I get mine from work so I don't have to go out shopping for it.

Walmart does not have the filter.


To be honest, I dump 5 qts in and it's right on the line

Thanks Scotiez ill go for all those things. As for the filter I have read that some people get it at the dealer. I think I can get under the car without a jack.

im debating if i should get my oil changed today. the sticker in my car has a date of 8/18 or just a little over 13K. since it's Friday and i have it changed it will be free(military). oil life is below half. any suggestions.

GM AC/Delco Dexos is not available yet for consumers. The parts counter told me by the end of the summer they should get it in by the quart.
