Hey Scotiez since you seem pretty knowledgeable on the stuff what's the special twist for the "Dexos" label? What's it's improvement/trade off over the last cert?
I've gotten the impression that it's more catalytic converter friendly from the limited research I've done, or atleast "the same stuff as before but now more enviro friendly".
The reason I ask is because I'd REALLY like to know why it's recommended to decide if I Need a certified oil or not. I've been running a private labeled synthetic since about 5k mi and it's not "dexos" certified but met all the previous oil specs..... The last spec GM released wasn't so much for engine longevity so much as it was tangentially to it and pro emissions (it actually lost some high pressure lubricants), is this Dexos similar thing?
dexos1 oil is introduced in all gas GM vehicles, and dexos 2 in all diesel GM vehicles in 2011. dexos 1 is very similar to GF-5 oils which was introduced in all oils in 2012.
dexos was certified by GM for several reasons,1. Fuel economy cause dexos is a synthetic blend bringing friction lower then conventional oils, 2. it was also used to extend the time and distance between oil changes reducing the amount of waste for the environment and economy. Conventional oils were recommended to change every 3 months or 3 thousand miles, Dexos is designed to be used by the oil life monitor in GM vehicles which calculates in driving distance between start and stops, temperature of the engine at start and warm up. Using dexos approved oil should now be able to go a lot longer between oil changes and some vehicles going up to 10,000 miles depending on driving type and temperatures. I was one who changed my oil every 3 months regardless of miles drivin. I am now going by the oil life monitor and going about 6 to 8 thousand miles depending on what time of year it is. In the winter months in North Dakota the oil life monitor gets used up rapidly cause of the -0 temps we have here.
Also may I add this, the price of dexos1 is not cheap like conventional oil, The price of full synthetic is only pennies higher then dexos1 (synthetic blend) so why not just switch to a full synthetic on your next oil change. I did, I use full synthetic Mobil one in my sonic but what ever synthetic you use is your choice of course. Just be sure it is dexos1 approved. If you have an engine failure the GM dealer will take a oil sample and send it in to GM to determine warranty, If GM finds that this oil is NOT dexos1 licensed or certified it could void the warranty.
