Code Reader

My check engine light came on today and I wanted know what the code is before I bring it in. Is there a good code reader for the Sonic? Thanks for any help.

Any basic code reader will work just fine. You can get one for like $20-30

I bought a $15 OBD2 reader on Amazon that spat out code P0014. That indicated Camshaft Actuator B may be faulty. It looked to be an easy enough fix, but I read online that an oil change may fix the problem, so I tried that first and the check engine light cleared.

Just for reference - almost any auto parts store will also read codes for you.

Be careful of the code reader because it will send you in a direction you may not need to go. My check engine light came on after having my oil changed at Valvoline Instant Oil Change. I thought is was the MAF sensor. It turned out to be an improperly installed oil cap.

That has nothing to do with the code reader itself. It's just reporting what code the ECU is flashing.

Chasing the MAF when it turned out to be an improperly installed oil cap just happens to be a bad diagnosis of what that engine code signaled.

It seems my reprieve was short lived. When I drove my car yesterday, the engine light came on. I cleared the code, but I think I'll try to replace the camshaft(s). Anything I should know or where to look for parts? Thanks for any help.

why are you looking to replace the camshaft when the code says camshaft actuator?

thats like installing a new light fixture when the switch in the wall is the problem.

you should proably start with the VVT solenoids before you go swapping the cams out. replacement solenoids should run you $25-$30 each. just do the whole set.
