There wouldn't be knock while idling. How many miles on it? Of course it's difficult diagnosing over the internet but from what you described I'd start looking for vacuum related issues, what kind of vacuum are you pulling at idle? Do you have any kind of ODB device like an Ultragauge or Scangauge? If so you could see what your fuel trims are doing, that would tell you if you're looking at a vacuum problem.

Don't rule out a fuel contamination problem, such as water in the tank. You mentioned that the tank was quite low when the problem arose. You might try a fuel additive containing isopropyl alcohol, which will combine with water and allow it to be purged from the fuel system. One such additive is Gold Eagle Iso-HEET; comes in a red bottle.

Problem came back. Seems like it could be a cold engine or cold weather issue. Idle was bad and ran bad until it warmed up. What controls idle mixture? It smelled like bad combustion. I started the car with the remote.

Is this a spark, o2 sernsor, or maf issue? I have two o2 sensors so that makes it even more complicated.

Fuel is full now

Just under 30,000 miles
Vacuum is around 10 - 16 hg. Jumps into the 20's when throttle closes. Sometimes joggles down to 8 @ idle.

Ran the car, once warm things seemed pretty normal. Coolant seemed to bubble or gurgle near the firewall when I started the engine, let the rpm lower and reved lightly. Seemed to bubble each time I reved.
Trans temp 160F
Oil temp 230F
Coolant temp 233F

Misfires in all cylinders. Most recorded was 6 within the interval of torques refresh rate on cylinder 4. Then it reset to 0. The other cylinders get 2 each before resetting. Never has all 4 cylinders misfired together. At most 2 cyliders will misfire one after another.

Noticed oil was low but then realized I had just started and stopped the engine remotely so it was no longer the resting level and the fluid may have yet to drain back.

If not I suspect I may be ingesting oil which is causing the misfires. I also suspect thays why the initial startup is so bad. Oil seeps into the cylider while the car sits and cools off. Next time I start it the problem is back.
Head gasket?
PCV?

Gotta check my throttle body and plugs in a few hours if I don't zonk out.

Just had a sudden jolt at idle while waiting at an intersection. I felt like I lost my braking power which could mean I lost vacuum to my brake booster? more importantly my car almost stalled, but it felt pretty violent.

Prior to that it had a rough start. The steering wheel was vibrating.

I'm still eager to check my plugs.

Any-who do you think this is a coil pack issue, like an early warning sign?

Severe knock?

No codes and the car ran pretty well afterwards. Even idled well.

I can't afford for him to die on me. I have a 1000 mile round trip road trip on the 16th.


One more tidbit: The car had 1 or 2 bars on the fuel gauge left so it was getting low.

After reading about all your trouble, your problems are serious enough to warrant a compression test. I'd start there if you havent

I will look into getting a compression checker. Or rent one.

48500 miles and I am having misfire issues on my 2014 sonic. Trying to work through a possible bad tank of fuel. Added Seafoam and it seemed to help. Idling better stumbles on acceleration....sometimes more some times not much. It was having an off and on stumble at the stop light AC on....we live on South Florida so it's on most of the time. Could a coil pack be going bad at that low of milage? I know it's coming up on 11 years old....Cleared misfire codes on 1 and 4. When it misfires really badly the traction control light starts flashing then the check engine light. Once it comes out of it, lights go away.
