Consequences of topping off fuel tank.

i fill-up based on convenience and combine trips, sometimes that's quarter tank, sometimes the yellow light is on. in winter time I would always try to keep it topped/above half for weight and the all to common traffic jam...was a bigger deal when I had my truck rather than this sipper.

I always fill at 1/4 tank or more because I like the reserve for emergencies. What happens when you get up one day an gas is being rationed and the long line makes you late? It happened in the 70s and very well could happen again. What if power goes out an no one can pump due to pumps running on electricity. Not all stations have generator. Plus the fact that it helps your fuel pump last longer is another bonus. I'll suck up the 1-2 mpg I loose I'm exchange for always having some gas for when I need it.

The power goes out? It's likely so localized that 1/8th or 1/16th of a tank gets you to fuel.
If not, it's likely so widespread and 1/2 tank isn't getting you to gas in time.
(This happened near where I lived a long time ago, a guy made a hand-sump, and a killing.)

A gas shortage with rationing?
1/4 tank isn't going to go far and neither is 1/2 tank.
You can sit with your car off with less than 1/4, and if you're talking about "having some" to last you it isn't stretching that far.
In a crisis, if you don't have an actual tank/supply somewhere you aren't getting far at all, it doesn't last 1, 2, even 3 days, a shortage is a long minute brother.
Cases like this ^ make me glad I can work remotely from home.

keep pumping in that extra click or 10 and you'll be replacing your carbon canister.

i replace them all the time on bmw....and i used to on chevy trucks, malibu, and some of the smaller gm vehicle. none of the suv/s and 2-seaters though...

Severous has a very good point!! If you keep pumping the excess fuel will run into the evap system and charcol canistor and lead to an early demise. (I still do it lol)

Is BMW still having issues with their evap system??? In 08 we had a lot in the shop I belive e90 and whatever the last gen 5 series were the problem chidls. Idr

I still have yet to successfully top off my fuel tank (visible gas sitting at the top of the tube). I can do it easily with my Mazda, but the Sonic keeps swallowing up what I put into it. Often when the overflow/kickback feature (or whatever the hell you call it) on the handle engages, I can fit in another 1-2 gallons, but it's usually at a very slow pace and VERY time consuming. Squirt, click, squirt, click, squirt, click...and so on. I usually just give up after a few minutes.

I like to slightly hold the handle down to drizzle as much gas in so I can go longer times between gas stations.

One time I wasn't paying attention and gas was flowing out and down the side of my car. :blankface:

With my drive I'm filling up every 2-3 days. Very annoying (to me).

Both my 97 Regal and 05 Caravan wouldn't handle any topping up, if I was at $59.75, by the time I was at $60.00 there was gas running down the side of my vehicle which is more then enough incentive to never top up again, and that's at $1.50 per litre, or $5.68 per US gallon. Oh and having localized blackout's for some can mean some serious driving, if we lose power in my town it is about 50km (30 Miles) to the next town and therefore gas station, and there is only one station in town, and one place I lived it was about 100km to the next fill up

Ha, most people around here don't even lock their doors, car or house. But everyone does carry a gun, it's Northern Ontario, kinda like West Virginia, we red necks have to hunt, lol

Yeah where I live you have to lock EVERYTHING !!! I left my truck unlocked by accident one time and got everything inside stolen that wasn't bolted down, and they left the truck door opened and killed my battery the little f*uckers

That's how it is here too. I work in a pretty ghetto area so anything that isn't locked down is taken and anything seem from a window is smashed.

I have family up north and they NEVER lock their doors. EVER. I can't imagine it. I lock my apt door just to check the mail.

I leave my car unlocked and one time my dog alarmed me something was going on in the driveway, I went out the back door with my 357 and snuck up on him and **** the hammer back and he stopped in his tracks. Made a citizens arrest and the cops halled him away for court!. HA Citizen justice.

Never have any other incidents since....
