With 96K on it, I would change the intake manifold. It contains the PCV valve which has been problematic. Also, the thermostat should be changed and it's water outlet and the water pump.

If you have not had problems with these things. . . yo are living on borrowed time. If the PCV valve gets plugged it will likely blow out the rear main crankshaft seal and that is $$$$. Not to mention it will foul and dmage your turbo.

Yeah I had a bad PCV valve cover at 50K and a bad thermostat housing outlet thing replaced at 65K cause it cracked. So replace thermostat and the water pump?

The T-Stat and Water pump would be good to do. I would keep checking the water outlet (see threads here on it) as well as the PCV valve/Intake Mainfold. Many do not get much over 50K if that before it needs cleaning of replacing.

Here are some recent threads on this. I would read the last dozen r so posts regarding Pirate Luke and his journey and advice. He has a very good list of links, and desciption of what goes on with the PCV in this engine.

Also, here is a recent thread he posted with picture of a CLEAn PCV and what it can look like even after 50K miles or so.It gets dirty fast.

I did the mod as a temporary fix until I replaced my whole intake, worked perfectly fine. The system design when under 50k miles is still new and clean and operates rather efficiently for what it was intended to do. At high mileage applications it ends up being the weak point because oil residue gets inside and it looks like this.

Here is a small 11/32 nut I put next to the orange check valve for scale (notice how tiny the holes that allow vacuum flow to occur are):

PCV maintenance is required at minimum, even just using a Q-tip with cleaning solution will help tremendously. You might check to make sure yours isn't just clogged and is indeed missing. You can just pull off the black corrugated hose going to the top of the intake manifold to see what's in the above pictures. Just a single metal retainer holding it on that needlenose pliers are perfect for, and takes quite literally 3 minutes.

the 1.8 is the better option for reliability, it leaks less and the pvc system is not as much of an issue. and as for the trans, the 5 speed stick has the least issues.

I bought a 1.8L. I like the idea and torque of the 1.4L . . I did not want to be constantly on edge about fixing it. I find the 1.8L fine for my general driving.

I’ve been changing my trans fluid every 100,000 and my water pump started leaking at 190,000. I never changed the intake yet. I’ll put that on the list
