Do tire plugs really work?

My tire has a nail in it that's started to leak more and more air... I've never used a tire plug before but my tire only has 6k on it. Is it worth replacing or using the plug?

if it's in the tread, go to discount tire and pay the 10 bucks to have them repair it.

The proper and permanent repair would be dismounting the tire from the rim, and installing a patch/plug (a patch with an attached plug that is pulled through the hole). A plug that is applied from the outside, without dismounting and inspecting the tire casing, is not a good idea; especially with a tire that has many more servicable miles left in it.

A plug installed from the outside; although considered permanent by some experts, is not the safest repair.

I keep a patch kit in my glove box. If done properly, a four dollar patch kit can save you time and money. I've never had one leak or fail. I use to carry a bike pump too. One time a tire went flat on the freeway in my Camaro. I pulled off the next exit, pulled the nail, patched the hole, pumped the tire and was back on the freeway in less than 10 minutes.

I've even patched a tire on my sport bike once, but don't try that at home.

If its in the tread area a plug should work, I actually put one in the outside tread on my truck and its still going 20k mi later (plugs in the sidewall or outside tread is a legal no no but I did it myself just an fyi)

They do work usually and are quick and cheap but as others have said they are not ideal.

Not a fan of patch plugs in most applications, I've never had much luck with them when I was a tech. Inside patches work good and depending on where u go are pretty cheap.

I used plugs many times in the past they can do the trick, But I've always used them as a way to get back on the road until I can replace the tire.

Yes I had a plug on my one tire for 30k miles no issues I always carry some

I've plugged my tires quite a few times on my vehicles and my rhinos and have never had an issue, I would suggest a patch from the inside but when your out in the middle of no where with a small hole nothing compares to a plug kit

I always plug small holes. Its cheap and rewarding

definitely. too much stress and deformation of the tire. It'll get you back to town but then it's time for a new tire.

Cars, on the other hand seem to do pretty well with them. If it was my car I'd take it in and get it patched but if you already have the kit and feel adventurous it won't hurt to try and plug it yourself. Worst case, it doesn't hold and you take it in and pay the $10 to get it patched.

For me personally, I would only use a plug to get to a tire shop to get a new tire put on. But I'm particular about certain things, tires being one of them.

Thought I'd bump an old one; I have a tire plug in my left front currently. it seems to be holding fine.
