Gas cap placement

Its been 3 weeks since I put gas in my sonic. If I remember correctly, when you tighten the gas cap you will hear 1 click (not as loud as older gas caps) then when you let go it will spring back a little bit. At this point the cap has been tightened correctly.

Mine is more of a creak than a click and my check engine comes on every 10 tanks or so for evap leak, good times lol

Go to another sonic in the lot or on the showroom floor and try another gas cap. You will see what we are talking about. Also let the service dept. know that you keep getting the evap leak code, make sure they note your records even if they don't fix it. That way, when your warrantee is expired and you start having the issue more often you have a leg to stand on.

Your other option is just buy a new gas cap and install it yourself. I haven't looked but the cap tether shouldn't be too hard to get off and on.

No but I have a cool tip that tells you which side it's on. If you look at the gas gauge where the lil gas can is there is an arrow that points to which side it's on. I know this May sound stupid to some but you'd be surprised how many people don't know that.

I prefer it on the passenger side just always have don't think there is a reason really.

I personally see no need for the arrow. Once a new owner has filled the car up one time, I hope they would be sharp enough to find the gas cap in the future without it.

It's something they have done on most vehicles for years. Makes it easier for people that don't typically drive a car and takes up no space really so what difference does it make?

I prefer driver's side. That is the way most people seem to have it in the US, so when I pull into a busy station, all the spaces are occupied by people with their car parked driver's side next to pump, so I have to pull in facing their nose, and someone else inevitably pulls in facing their tail, so while I wait for them to pull out past me, said third party pulls forward to the pump. Irritating.

I used to have a car where the tank was in the middle, under the license plate, that way you could pull in on either side, best plan of all. Why it should be on one side or the other I have no idea!
