I usually keep things a long time; cars, appliances, wives, etc. Not long ago I went to purchase a new gas can to hold gas for my lawn mower (had it since 1995). My old can of 20+ years was still good except there was a lot of crap floating around in the bottom of it. So instead of trying to rinse it out an cleaning it, I discarded it and went to buy a new one.
To my surprise the new cans were over engineered for safety to the point of making them more unsafe IMHO. They have this 'no spill' spout that is supposed to make it difficult to overfill a lawn mower tank and reduce spillage. And removing the spout so the gas can can be filled is like trying to solve a Chinese puzzle.
I tried to pour some gas into my automobile gas tank using the no spill spout and that dam thing jammed in the car's fill spout and I couldn't remove it. So I have this half filled portable gas can sticking out from my car's fill spout with gas dripping all over the place. Thank you Consumer Product Safety Commission!
The reason gas cans have been redesigned is to make them safer around kids. See the web site below. However in doing this, the CPSC has made the cans more dangerous for even adults to use; again IMHO. There are much simpler ways to make these can safer around kids. But it seems that the CPSC went out of its way to avoid those solutions.
Please don't think that I am not sensitive to the hazards that children face. I am a pediatric nurse and I have taken care of children injured in hundreds of ways. But this solution for gas cans from the CPSC makes things less safe for everyone. Our government at work!
