I try and keep mine as long as i possibly can. when it starts giving too much trouble, thats when it will go. I give some leway on some things, but after a while i say goodbye. I started driving in 2003 with a hand me down car given to me by my brother when he decided to get a different car after i got my lisence.
Started off with a 1987 Ford Taurus Station Wagon that was two-tone blue and already been thru hell with my brother driving it. you name it, between my brother and i, we broke it on that car. driveshaft twice, brakes galore, heater cores, springs, batterys, and many other items.
But the thing that made me get rid of this car was when i fried the ECU in it and had to go get a new one. Dont ask, i just did. had over 160,000 miles on it at least, closer to 200,000 when i sold it i believe.
2004 came and the Taurus got sold and i bought my next car a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire Sedan with the 2.2L 4cyl. Engine in it. Had that car for 8 years. that car ran very well and got me thru alot of difficult moments. Great winter car.
i went thru many winters and drove thru outragous snow covered roads with this thing and only got stuck twice with it over the 8 yrs of driving it. it was a beast. Age, and miles on the engine did this one in and i was just ready for a change come late 2011- Early 2012. Bought it with 51,000 miles on it, When i traded it in, it had 110,000 miles on it.
backtrack a bit, in 2009 i bought a 2006 Dodge Dakota Truck for a second vehicle and to haul stuff when needed. It was an ok truck. 3.7L V6 in it. terrible gas mileage in this truck, even if you babied the hell out of it. The rear wheel drive made this a horrible vehicle during the winter time only being 2wd not 4wd. Plus, it was a dodge, and you name it, it broke constantly on it.
The cost to repair this truck was outragous. It was nice to have while i had it, but it had to go. So moving forward to 2012, When i traded in the sunfire, i traded in the Dakota with it and bought my now 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LT Sedan, The Fallen! Love the Sonic and have been very happy with the 1.8L engine and its great gas mileage. Been having a blast with it since i bought it.
I plan on keeping the Sonic for as long as it will allow me to drive it. would like to at least until i either pay it off or get it down to a couple grand owed yet before trading it in if i were to do so down the road. All depends whats going on by that time. at least 6-8 years i plan on keeping this car.
