Official: What are your real world MPG Numbers

Having only ever come across one of these systems in the real world, I advise you to be careful. The one I came across saw its biggest gains from the modified oxygen sensor signal. Essentially they were using a false reading to cause a lean running condition.

I just got off the phone and that is exactly what we ended up talking about. To use water for fuel, you have to split the hydo from the oxy and more oxygen makes it through which cause the computer to run the engine RICH. I specifically asked him about this. Anyhow, that's what those volo things do. ...calibrate the oxygen sensors for supplemental hydrogen.

I'm hoping my trifecta map can adjust the o2 sensors.

That was a bright observation on the first issue to pop up.

I've never seen pulse and glide net a 65% increase in fuel economy over EPA highway ratings on a non-hybrid (without professional hyper-miler drivers). Has anyone else been able to achieve this kind of mpg consistently?

Maybe your wife threw in a few extra gallons without telling you.

The whole tank was used down hill with the wind at his back! I don't think he gets this consistently, but under the ideal driving conditions I think it is possible to get these numbers. I'm getting free lessons from Eric when he comes back to Michigan!

it was quite ideal. got lucky with rare traffic, and my commute is 97% highway; obviously a made up statistic, but you get my point of mostly highway.

I switched to performance mode when I filled up, and took this picture right before leaving the Keys. After 160 miles the DIC indicated 48.9 MPG....not too shabby! I could have done better if I had cruise available while in performance mode.

Eastern Seaboard Trip Mileage

Hey everyone-

So, from 1/1/13-1/8/13, two of my friends and I took a trip starting in Metro Detroit, heading accross the Ohio and PA turnpikes to Philladelphia, then heading to Seacaucus, NJ (there was no way I was paying for parking in NYC).... then down to DC.... then to Baltimore.... then finally finishing out the trip back in Ann Arbor, MI. All in all, the trip was 1700+ miles. During the trip, I did not particularly baby Sonny, but I didn't flog him either- just kept up with traffic (pretty much have to, as I don't have cruise )

Anyhow, even with snow on the way there and cold on the way back, having reset the fuel-economy-o-meter in the driveway in Detroit before we left and not resetting it until after the trip was completed, we averaged an amazing 35.2 miles per gallon. And that was WITH city driving included. I can't even imagine what it would have been had we not driven around the cities!!

The only thing that I would like to see is how Sonny would have performed on this very same trip using a summer blend of gasoline, as well as how the Mobil 1 Full Synthetic which I'm now using may have helped mileage. Oh well... there's always next time!!

Well, first day with the new Sonic. Was on the highway and reset the DIC (huh huh, I said DIC), cruise set at 60 MPH (100kph), and averaged 8L/100 km. For my US friends, that translates to 28.3 MPG US.

However, I am guessing this is somewhat problematic as:
- Outside temperature was -16*C - That's about 3*F
- Double whammy, as because the temperature was so cold, had to use the defrost, which apparently engages the A/C
- Other threads claim the mileage improves over time
- I set up my on star account when I got home, and saw that all 4 tires were in the 28-29psi range

According to Transport Canada numbers on the window sticker, I'm supposed to be getting 5.5 L on the highway (41.2 MPG US). Seems a bit optimistic for a 1.8 AT - apparently no US EPA means you get to put what you want on the sticker.

I'll report back once I can do the pen and paper on a full to empty to refill tank, but curious how many MPG people feel I may have lost through using the defrost, ambient temperature, tire pressure, and newness.

Sad part is at 3*F today, this was one of the warmest days in the last few weeks. Overnight lows have been in the -18*F range over the last few weeks, and with wind chill, even daytime temps have been in the -30*F range.

Smits, think they've never seen temps like this in El Paso, ever. Though you may be able to prove me wrong.

I'm not sure if the compressor runs when it's that cold. I bet the other factors cost you 5+ MPG.

Thanks Maddog, we'll see if the DIC gives a better result tomorrow. Did also find out the Cdn government still uses a 2-cycle MPG test, and isn't moving to the EPA 5-cycle test until 2015.
