Whether you really need OEM for warranty, I can't say. However, I see no reason not to go OEM, in my mind. Availability might be an issue, but any dealer should carry it, even if they charge $12.95 for what I could have ordered for about $7 or 8 via amazon. Oh yeah, the OEM is made in USA!
Hi Alan,Dumb question, but is something going to flash up on the dash when it is time for service? My wife has the car and I don't have access to the manual. I'm just under 5k on the odo. Checked the oil recently and the level/condition are just fine.
Yes, Amazon has the ACDelco oil filter for $7. I bought mine last month here.

I just got my sonic back from the dealer after they removed some of the oil from my car yesterday because there was a weird rattling noise either when my foot was on the brake when the car was in drive and when i started the car i heard a weird noise there as well but only for a brief moment. the car used to be a loaner and now has about 4300 miles on it.
3000,5000 or 7000 miles ? I don't have a manual yet.
Most manufacturers are suggesting 7,000+ miles in their service guides for average condition use. MOST of us fall in that description (THEIR description is usually slanted towards warranty-denying-definition using strict and exclusive language). If you're not racing and trying to beat personal records at every start, or crusing at 85MPH on the highway for hundreds of miles, then you are fine with doing a change at or after 5,000 miles with even the lamest of oils available. People often push synthetics for 10,000+.
Stop drinking the kool aid, and better yet - stop passing it around!
