Oh well....I have not changed mine yet but I expect to do it soon. I am at 66% on the oil life monitor and have driven 2675 miles so far.

General conclusions can be drawn from the law of averages. Sending oil in for detailed analysis is overkill IMO. Testing of conventional motor oils being used today suggests 5,000 is safe for the majority, and many still do their work well past 7,000 miles. Google has some of that info.

This isn't my first car forum, and certainly not the first/last time this topic will be raised here. I'm not trying to convert the already convinced. Hopefully someone will read these words, go do a little additonal homework, and make the decision that's best for them. What is unequivocal fact is that for 99% of drivers, performing changes every 3,000 miles is wasteful. The exception is if you let your car sit around alot, and don't get 3,000 miles on it in less than 6 months.

I agree with the second part of your post. Obviously this is not my first automotive forum either.


Sending oil in for UOA is the only way to know how long you can go on an oil in your engine with your driving habits and your modifications.

Other than that you are guessing and as I said before pissing in the wind.

I run royal purple and change it once a month, regardless of mileage. It's expensive, sure, but peace of mind has no price, right?

Between 3-4000 a month. I know I don't need to change it that often, but it's relaxing. I enjoy working on my car, even if it's changing oil.

I've done an oil change or two at less than my normal interval just because I wanted something to do on my car haha.

Something I didn't see mentioned or overlooked is lots of short trips, which is incredibly degrading on oils, would you recommend a 7500 mi OCI to someone that makes 3x the # of trips for the same total mileage as an average driver. Just throwing it out there to be a PITA ;p

If you use one oil I would stick with that same oil unless you have to switch for a change

Same here , since this car is practically brand new there is nothing to fix on it , so changing the oil right now is the only way to wrench on my sonic . It is an overkill with only 3500-4000 miles on the synthetic oil I use but it fun to do right now . Once I start fixing stuff more often I will probably back off and go for longer intervals.

I would've changed that oil so long ago. Especially since its the oil it came with from the factory.

Wow, that is a lot of mileage to put on the factory fill . You should ask the dealer to keep the oil and then send it in for a analysis .
