What about mods. Will they try to blame a bad coil on your exhaust or you only void your exhaust warrantee?

Dont know last time it was over there they dident say anything. I also broke the retaining clip on the coil plug so its held on by a zip tie anyways

fyi: I just picked up a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 5w-30 and noticed the bottle is labeled "Dexos2".

No luck finding the oil filter for the 1.4L at the local Wal Mart. Did find the Fram CH10246at Pep Boys, but it was $12!! Found the AC Delco PF2257G at amazon.com for $6.15 each, so ordered 4 of those.

Thx for the tip on the AC DELCO on Amazon. I've added that to my shopping list for my next oil change. Paid $10 for the Same PF2257G at my stealer.

Sean: glad you found that helpful. $6.15 is the cheapest price I could find on the PF2257G filter for the Sonic.

Considering the filter is just the filter element without the can, I do not understand why these filters cost 4-5X more than a filter in a metal can. Seems like a ripoff, just because it is a 'new' type of filter. I was buying Motorcraft FL-820S filters for my ex's Ford Escape for $3.49 at Wal-Mart.

I did my first oil change today at 1797 miles, wanted to get that factory oil out and get a fresh crankcase full of Mobil 1 5W-30.

I bought some gm filters from gmpartsdirect for $5 a piece. I bought 4 to hold me over for a couple yrs

I was going by the oil life monitor but living in North Dakota where the winter temps get pretty low and i warm up the car before i go someplace when the temps are below 0 my Oil life monitor was down to almost 10% after 5000 miles. Oil life monitor almost doubles that in the summer months here. I think the cold and warm ups has a big effect on how the OLM calculates the percentage. After they completed the oil change they told me since i use Mobil 1 i can ignore the oil life monitor and go 9000 miles between oil changes. I asked if this will go against the warranty and he said no. Do you think he is right or should i stick with what the OLM says?

The OLM uses many variables, environment and engine cycles are just some. The information is out there. While under warranty I would follow the manual or the OLM. Don't go beyond.

I would use the OLM as a guide as to when the oil should be changed. I would never exceed its recommendations.
I get nervous when the OLM approaches 50% and the oil looks like black paint instead of engine oil. If the oil is black and stinks, I change it.

I am refering to oil that may have fuel contamination; more common on the newer direct fuel injection equipped engines. The Equinox, in particular, had high pressure fuel pump seal problems and admitted raw fuel into the crankcase, causing dilution and contamination.

I know what you mean about fuel contamination. Wasn't sure that is what you meant at first.

Um hmm. Ask to get that in writing and watch how fast they change their tune. Don't exceed the OLM.

even using Mobil 1, 9000 in my opinion is a bit much, especially in North Dakota with those low temps.

I tell all my customers that when using Mobil 1 or Liqui Moly 5-6K is the most I would do.

I personally change my oil every 5K

I used to have a jeep wrangler and I changed my own oil in that. Didn't need a jack or ramps just slide under and drop the oil. I might just change my own oil in the sonic too. They made a mess under the hood. Spilled oil all over the manifold when they changed filter. I tried wiping as much off as I could but while driving I still smell hot oil burning off the manifold. I checked to make sure I had no leaks so untill all the spilled oil burns off I Sappose I'll smell that.
