Quotes for Repair, Big $$$

Hi all, I have a 2013 Sonic hatchback. I bought it used in 2015 and it has been pretty reliable over the years. I took it into a local Chevy dealership last week to have some things looked at, and to get an estimate for repairs and I was shocked at how high the amounts were. I understand everything is more expensive these days but $1650 for new shock absorbers? $300 for a new battery? $300 for a new visor? $600 for a gearshift box? $350 to fix the window switch? All in all they wanted $4000 for all these jobs and that was outside my budget so I declined the repairs for now. But that didn't stop them for charging me $600 for an oil change and "diagnostic fees" anyway.

It's been years since I've taken my car into a dealership for work. I have a guy at a gas station I usually go to and that has worked out fine. Only reason I took the car into this place was because my guy said he couldn't fix the window situation. So are these fees typical? Is this just an LA thing? Thanks.

unfortunaly shop rates in excess of $150 an hour, especially at dealerships are sadly the norm these days

1650 for shocks and struts is absolutely ridiculous. rear OE shocks for my 2013 hatchback (just replaced) were like $75 each. took about 6 minutes a side to install.

GM Struts are about $98 each, but thats just the housing, you'd be paying labor to swap the spring over. aftermarket quickstrut assemblies are $100 ish per side.


hell you can get a full zet of ZZP premium coilovers and rear shocks and springs for $1000.


300 for a new battery - depending on the brand/type isnt out of this world. the AGM for my silverado is like $260 just for the batt, not to mention install time.

for $300 for a visor... id just junk yard one and replace it my dang self. its a couple bolts/screws.



as for $600 for an oil change and diags.... can you break that down as to how many hours of diag time they billed you for?

that i'd be calling GM customer care over. like yesterday. i would have lost my mind at the dealership and called from there.


and i'd never be going back to that dealer again in my life.
