Rumor: Chevy Sonic SS in the Works??

I looked for a long time before I bought my RS, tried to make sure that I wouldnt buy it and have a SS-ish version with a 1.6T come out a few months later. If we're talking another year out at least, I'm glad I bought my RS and VERY glad GM is going to make something fast in the subcompact market. The RS is fun, but there are a bunch of similar sized cars that run circles around it.

hopefully they will have an easy factory upgrade for the current RS cars so the average joe can power up his/her RS without effecting warranty if done by the dealership

I'll take one, either way. 170/206 with fuel economy probably close to current MPG, or 200/221 and probably 1.8 AT economy. That torque would be very fun, and if this came to our dealers by Spring 2015 I would seriously consider buying one.

so there we have it. all option manual or auto 6 or 7speed- 1.4t standard, 1.6t = good rs, and 2.0t or lnf = good SS ....now if only someone is listening. ok...a 1.6t diesel for the dusk

Should the Fiesta ST be a sales winner I think GM will be forced to match it with something, ... the Sonic RS simply doesn't cut it, nice as it is. So GM might simply wait a year or two before responding. By that time the Sonic might be refreshed anyway.

A diesel would be very interesting. VW has had a lock on the smaller diesel market for many years. If the diesel in the Cruze proves successful (and reliable) GM would be foolish not to place the engine in other vehicles, with the Sonic the most obvious candidate. Ford recently introduced a 1.0 liter turbo in their Fiesta that gets 45 mpg highway. I would prefer to go with a diesel that does the same; I think a lot of people would do the same.

VW also had a lock on the "hot hatch" market for a very long time. Other players have come and gone but the GTI has endured. A bigger turbo engine in the RS and a price that undercuts the GTI would be a killer combo, IMHO. Ford is trying to reap this with their Fiesta ST and Focus ST offerings. Wake up GM!!

Around August 2012 GM announced a new turbocharged 1.6L engine would go into production in December of that year for the European market, and that it would come to the USA in two years. The Chevrolet Sonic was among vehicles the announcement the announcement listed slated to get it.

What we do not know is did the two years start with the announcement or with the start of the engine's production. Either way, it looks like the new engine could start appearing as a mid model year high performance version of the Sonic.

The engine is slated to arrive in two versions, one 170HP and the other 200HP. It also looks like a tuned version could easily get into the 220's.

Something to look forward to. I have seen nothing to indicate but hope it will be introduced at the Detroit Auto Show slated to start a few weeks from now.

According to wiki (not sure it's right) the cobalt ss turbo was 260hp. If I was gonna get an ss sonic I'd like something similar to those numbers. Otherwise it's not worth a real upgrade.

Well nothing in the Detroit auto show. Another disappointment. I wonder why they are waiting so long to compete with the fiesta st. There is definitely a market for the sonic SS.

A high horsepower sonic would fit the bill nicely. It would be a high performance hatchback.

Of course they could also go with a z moniker.

But the Z06 w/ Z07 performance package went a long way toward subduing my disappointment. I admit I am having a hard time waiting for next week when I can look at it in person.

The one in the NAIAS intro this morning was most definitely yellow.

625HP/635TQ, 77.5 inches wide, and a choice of 8 speed automatic or 7 speed manual. A true supercar.
