Anyone have any pictures of their road bikes in the back of their hatch? Preferably with both tires off. Looking at trading in the sedan for the hatch to avoid leaving my bike in the elements on long trips.

In all seriousness though, since you want to keep it out of the elements, the hatch is super roomy in the back with the seats down. I don't have a picture but I've loaded 50" tv's back there, coffee tables, $300 worth of groceries, you name it.
I don't know if it's worth taking a hit on your Sedan on a trade-in...but that's up to you.

I know this isn't what you asked, but how about a cover that slips on the front of the bike? it will keep the rest fairly dry.
It's got to be cheaper than trading in on a hatch what with all the depreciation loss you'll see. Afterall, the rest of the bike shouldn't get any damage on it from rain/snow if it's lubed properly. protect the grips and the saddle and you're good to go.

That wouldn't work because of my subs and I also don't want to lay it sideways. I'm looking at having two mounts the fork and rear tire mount can slide into and clamp so the frame actually stays in the upright position.

I've actually gotten a flat on the rear tire while it was on the rear hitch so I'd rather just leave it inside the car if possible

Do you think it could fit in the upright position with the seats down? I have a smaller 54cm frame. How I'm thinking, I would put a metal 2-3 inch high mount on the back of the rear seat and another 2-3 inch mount near the hatch door so the frame could clamp in.

Dude, that's a million to 1 chance of that happening. There are better solutions out there than losing money on a trade in.
I have my $2500 MTB on the hitch rack. I'm not worried about it.

Not unless you took both wheels off. I don't think so, not if you still had one wheel on. Regardless of frame size you still have 700C wheels.

I did manage to fit my Schwinn 21 speed in the back with tires on. It was a bit of a pain to get in there. The front passenger seat was all the way up and the drivers seat was a little close too, though not all the way up. While I got it home, I wouldn't want to do it again. Sorry though, there's no pics.

Nice thread. Definitely makes my decision to get a hitch and hitch mounted rack. Would rather let my bike get a little dirty versus scratching up my interior and having to take both wheels off my 29" Trek Mamba mountain bike each time I need to haul.
Not to mention leaving space inside the car for hauling other gear.

I'm a big fan of a hitch-mounted rack and use one to haul my MTB, as mentioned above.
What I may not have mentioned in the past - there's one drawback that I've discovered. I was coming back form the trail and all the sudden I was caught in a brief shower. As you know, after not having rained in a while, the oil from the road surface will float on top of the rainwater until washed off. Since I was caught right in the beginning of it, the floating oil together with water spray ended up on my bike.
My front brake pads on the bike ended up being contaminated by oil and I've lost half the stopping power. Not a huge deal, considering that this is the first time this happened in years and new pads were about $14, but none the less, it's something to consider.
Not to say that this can't happen to a roof mounted bike if the spray is coming from a truck in front, but it's more likely to happen if you have your bike out back.
