Can I ask why you're choosing GM intake? MPFab for example makes an amazing intake (based on many reviews here of SOF) that is almost half the price. ZZP does as well with an almost identical setup for half price too.
The stock intake does keep temperatures down.. I think what the stock intake needs is a bigger inlet than the current diameter/size that drops down into the fender.
I have a MPFAB setup. Awesome sound and you get more than enough volume of air. It comes with a top of the line amsoil filter. No oiling. I strongly Do Not recommend any filter that you add oil. The excess oil will eventually over time build a film of oil on your Mass Airflow sensor. K&N filter will do nothing to improve performance as a stand alone add on. It will allow more dirt to pass though and clog your Mass Airflow sensor. Then dirt will make its way to the compressor of the turbo. Reducing efficiency over time. Probably won't notice but why chance it. Here is a good link on filters. See where Amsoil ranks versus K&N. Air Filter Comparison Study - GM Truck Central.
Another thing to mention is the MBFAB at the time I ordered mine uses an aluminum intake pipe after the filter. This pipe runs across and over the exhaust manifold. This is where you loose your advantage of cold air induction. I wrapped heatshield tape around the entire pipe and also heatshield panels on the separator box panel for maximum heat protection. I felt with all the heat coming from the exhaust at slower speeds and hot days you loose the advantage of cold air induction. The stock intercooler can only do I so much as far as heat transfer efficiency. If you noticed the OEM setup is not metal.
