Thermostat replacement P0128 code

Im curious.

Why do I see so many discussions about changing the whole thermostat housing say when you get the CEL code P0128 when you can just change the thermostat itself at the front of the housing?

My CEL came on last night. Groan. Seems like an easy enough job to do yourself.

Because it’s much faster and easier to change the whole housing rather than trying to find a compatible thermostat to throw in there. Plus I’m sure there is other reasons.

Taking off the whole housing or just the thermostat is four bolts either way.

Both parts are available to buy separate which was the reason I asked my rigional question.

Well you do what you think is best. Nobody is going to convince you either way. I have a 2012 with the 1.8l and never had to replace the thermostat, even with my used junkyard engine I had to put in about 2 years ago

Gobinator is the exception. I replaced t-stats three times in about 100K total miles on two different 1.8L Sonics I had and we take care of our cars.

The whole thing is NOT easier. There are other connectors to replace and if the gasket on the engine side is not leaking, maybe you can just do the t-stat itself off the front. T-stats without housings are available online.

Trouble is that you don't know what is going to happen when you take off the four E-10 bolts for the t-stat. The last one I did, the plastic base cracked as I removed the t-stat, so OK, replace the whole thing. It may have held with three bolts, but I did not want to risk it.

I take it the warranty has expired on your 2017? The tstat went on my 2015 at about 30K miles but fortunately it was within the three year time limit so it was free. I’m looking forward to replacing it again myself at 60K...but hopefully it’ll last longer!

Check with GM and/or your dealer. The T-stat may have extended warranty replacement.

Our daughter got her Sonic T-stat replace free of charge on her 2014 1.8L when it was 5 years old and had 72,000 miles on it.

She just called and the dealer said to bring it in. It had a leak that was starting to drip from it.

Hi! So I had the p0128 code/ cooling temp. It actually keeps turning on and off. Could that mean it’s just my t-stat? Has any one else had the code turn on and off? I have a 2013 1.8l. Any help is appreciated! I would hate not to just replace the t-stat and not do the housing unit at the same time.
