Have a ticking noise from engine. Wife has had the 2017 sonic turbo for 5 years and says it has always been there. I only hear it at idle sometimes it sounds much louder then other and sometimes at idle I don't hear it at all? Recently had a P0420 code that I cleared by changing the flex pipe ( was broken) and rear cat as well as both 02 sensors with Bosch ones car is running much better. But still the annoying ticking . Could it be a knock sensor going bad? The car runs lean LTFT at idle about 25 and neg 2 -5 STFT. There is no DTC now? The timing is about 5 degrees so I am good there too??? Any suggestions or experience is this ticking ok ?

Doing some research. There is no DTC so I'm having second thoughts about rushing to change the knock sensor it requires a great deal of patience and work. I really want to focus on my other cars for now.
Going to start at easier solutions. Gas treatment and oil treatments. The car does have 111k mileage.
May also try higher octane fuel and see what happens.
Any advice out there?

Try the evap purge solenoid/valve. Had the same problem and that $40 part was the answer. Part # 55573017. It's on the top of the intake manifold towards the back. Unplug the connector and if the ticking stops, that's the faulty part. Hope this helps!

Another vote for the evap purge solenoid. I started to hear a minor tick at about seven years/60K miles and noticed it was coming from the top side of the intake manifold, so I just bought one, had it on me for when the ticking got significant, tried to install it, it was slightly counterintuitive, I happened to be out of town visiting friends including one who is a former professional mechanic and his son is into restoring and racing cars, and the son had it installed in about two minutes flat. Ticking gone. Note there's sort of a sewing machine effect with this engine that doesn't go away with the solenoid change!

thanks guys for the responses I've got some emission issues going on that have gotten worse. Have a 2023 KIA now for mor dependable driving but I have decided to work on getting 200k out of the sonic as a daily driver to and from work. Going to post a new thread concerning a P0171 Code I recently had.

The P0171 is the pcv fail. Instead of replacing the entire intake manifold, cruzekits.com has a fix kit for the 1.4L that you don't need to remove the manifold. You will probably need to replace the valve cover though. There is a tiny opening on the circular part of the valve cover on the back right (when facing the engine from front) and you might hear a hissing sound from that. If you cover it with your finger and the idle changes, that means the diaphragm is bad and the valve cover will need to be changed. I found one on ebay for pretty cheap and it's a quick install with only an E10 socket being the odd thing. Definitely get that socket as it's used a lot on the 1.4L...it's a few bucks. Definitely think about the pcv fix kit...it will save a lot in the long run. My Sonic has 223k miles and it has been an awesome car. I do delivery work in it 5 days a week and it just goes and goes.
